While not official, it looks like the Indians have agreed to sign Ryan Spilborghs to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training according to a tweet by MLB’s Jordan Bastian. Spilly was non-tendered in December after a rough season, posting a .210/.283/.305 line in 223 PA’s.

I think Spilly was one of the best players to the fans – we sat down the right field line for several games over the years and after warming up he is the one that always came over and signed stuff for kids, etc…i will miss him…
I agree. He was always good about throwing balls into the stands after pre-inning warm-ups. I almost never saw other players do that.
I’ll miss him too. Its a shame a Spilly/Smith platoon never worked out.
With that, if I am not mistaken, Tulo and Helton are left as the only players from the 2007 WS team, not just from the 25 man roster but the 40 man roster too.
5 years and 38 players later……just wow.
And the sad thing is this wasn’t a “fire sale” or a complete overall through trades. Aside from Jimenez and Holliday almost every player was either cut for a loss or traded for very minimal return.
Has that ever happened to a team in the WS like that? At least the Marlins and Rays get good returns when they lose parts.
Prog, loving the home button-return to top of page trick you gave me in another thread.Thanks.
Right on Gary. Glad it helped.
I guess the Rockies just traded Slowey for a guy I’ve never heard of. I don’t get this team.
Putnam – Zach Putnam. Baseball Prospectus ranks him as the #20 player in the Indians organization – and say he’s ready for the big leagues as a 7th-8th inning guy this season.
Slowey AND CASH according to twitter. Lots seems to be happening today if you listen to twitter. Saw Brad Hawpe went to the Rangers.
Well I’m glad the SP thinning is occuring already, but yeah never heard of this guy. Who did we trade for Slowey again?
Someone in the Rockies system no one ever heard of.
Daniel Turpen went to the Twins in December for Slowey
Now we’re dealing for Scutaro?
Yes according the the stuff flying around twitter
Here’s some info on Putnam from a couple of years ago:
http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2010/03/indians-top-50-17-zach-putnam.html
for those that want to follow what’s happening with Scutaro just follow Renck on twitter
Finally something that makes me smile. Before we left ITR I had posted about about Scutaro. I was really hoping for it to happen back then and figured it was a dead deal. Yes he is 35 and yes he will have to adjust to 2nd base. I’m sure there will be those, just as I was/am skeptical about Cuddyer, that will be skeptical about Scutaro. I think it will work out…
And now the Scutaro deal seems to be dead. Red Sox need him to play shortstop.
What i think is very funny about the “red sox need him at short” is – didn’t the Red Sox realize when they started talking a trade that they would need someone at short? They didn’t just all of the sudden go, “oh wait, Scutaro, isn’t he our shortstop???” Why would that be the reason for talks to stop instead of them not starting at all?
I really wish it would go through because A. DOD making a trade this late in the game for someone that is 1/2 legit is nice and B. I want someone from the Red Sox instead of giving them our guys all of the time!
Jaredean, I had the same thought. BTW, does anyone know who we were going to give up for Scutaro?
According to the Boston Herald (http://tinyurl.com/7kvhmkv):
“the talks fizzled after the Rockies decided they did not want to take on Scutaro’s $6 million salary and the Red Sox realized they did not really have a suitable backup to Scutaro to play shortstop.”
So, it seems like we wouldn’t be giving up a player, most likely just taking his contract so they had more money to get Oswalt (which the article also mentions)…
I wonder if throwing in Jonny Herrera could have solved that. I know he’s not the typical offense that the Sox look for, but they are so flush everywhere that having a defensive SS would be good for them.
See my comment on the Slowey trade thread. If O’Dowd dumped Smith, Stewart, and Slowey to free up salary space to get Scutaro, this is a positive. Getting Scutaro ain’t exactly getting Pujols, but our second base situation is so horrid that it would count as major for me.
But I wouldn’t count on it.
Miss you Spilly-you made baseball fun, like it was when we were kids.
Just intuitively thinking about salary numbers for 2012, it seems to me that the Rockies are now about $10m under what they spent in salaries for the 2011 season. Also from the various reports that I have read, it seems to me that the Rockies and DanO have no intention of spending that extra money in 2012 – at least until the trade deadline and only if the team is in contention for a playoff spot at that time.
Bottom line is that the Rockies were not going to pay Slowey almost $3m in 2012 to fill a rotation spot for the Sky Sox. With Nicasio seemingly healthy and now with several better starting options, the Rockies have simply dumped some more salary on the Indians. Like it or not, that was what Jiminez deal was all about as well.
My guess is that the Rockies 2012 salary will be way closer to an $80m number than the $100m that they were rumored to have available last year ($90m) if everything went well – obviously 2011 did not exactly go as planned.
While Spilly certainly made valuable contributions during his stay here (remember that walk-off grand slam a couple of years ago?) I will miss his role as the resident goofball-in-chief. I think he went a long way in making a 162-game season bearable for his colleagues. I hope he returns to the starting lineup in Clevland and returns to hitting as we’ve seem him do in the past. He’s a good guy, and I hope we’ve not seen the last of him.
