Found a good article on the Rockies off-season by Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated:
“At first glance it’s a fix-it strategy bound for disaster: take an 89-loss team that quit last year and make it . . . older.”
Aging Rockies got even older this offseason -- and here's why

“Last year, for instance, the Rockies led the league in runs at home with 439 but ranked next-to-last with runs on the road with 296. ”
Ouch!
“Moreover, the Rockies were manhandled by righthanders last year. They were 48-66 in games against righthanded starters — only Houston was worse among the 30 teams — and Cuddyer, Scutaro, Blake and Hernandez all bat righthanded.)”
The logic of this statement escapes me. Is it a typo? Do they mean manhandled by LEFThanders?
i noticed the same thing. SI editors shouldn’t miss those errors.
I enjoyed the article. I think he was trying to make a point that if the Rox were so terrible against RH pitching, why have they added so many RH batters.
Obviously Tom doesn’t know how difficult it was for JT (bless his heart) to move his chess pieces around last year being saddled with a LH dominated squad. I find this stat interesting:
In 2010:
Overall team batting average against right handers – .259
Overall team batting average against left handers – .255
Tom Verducci is NOT a Rockies fan. AT ALL. I’m surprised there is anything even remotely positive in the article. I’d be curious to know if he asked Mr. O’Dowd for the interview or if Mr. O’Dowd wanted to get stuff out there to explain why he is going with the “geriatric” crowd. (sad that you are considered OLD at 35 yrs)
I thought JT’s comments on the starting rotation were somewhat surprising this morning. He said pretty much what some of us are saying … only just a little more pc. (purple correct)
