According to Troy Renck:
Esmil Rogers bears watching. He’s already attracted some mild trade interest. He’s out of options. So his spring become crucial, either make team or get moved in deal.

I think that this really will be a breakout year for Rogers…i’m surprised he is out of options, haven’t really kept track. But, he has some raw talent that would be very exciting to watch if he can just keep it under control. I’d hate to see him go for nothing, knowing he will one day make an excellent starter or at least a long reliever.
I hear Tampa may want to move Jeff Niemann, how about a straight up swap for Rogers. Niemann makes about $900K, which is a bit above what Rogers makes. Niemann is another guy I’d like to see in the Rox rotation-a pitcher coming over from the AL East. As I’ve mentioned before, I think there will be a flurry of activity towards the end of ST.
My sister says stop believing the St. Pete Times. :>)
It is true the Rays are headed to ST with 7 legitimate starters and there is speculation because of Niemann’s injury last season he would be the most likely to go. He only made 23 starts. I agree though, if the Rays let him go I think I would like to see him here. I think the Rockies could afford the $2.75m
I doubt Rogers would have much of a chance cracking the Rays starting rotation. They have too many good pitchers. Best case for that trade to have any chance of happening would be the Rays hoping he would be a strong middle/late reliever. Also, keep in mind the Rays are looking for solid offense not Rogers.
I still think Rogers is best suited to stay right here and give him a shot a being that 1 inning flame thrower. He has the stuff if he can control it and get his mind right with it.
While I am normally an ardent optimist when it comes to the Rockies personnel, I don’t have much faith in Rodgers. He one of those guys why just doesn’t seem to have the ability to go from a thrower to a pitcher. An established arm for him in a trade, I would welcome.
Rogers hasn’t been great. But he might be OK as a long reliever/spot starter. If we traded him, what would we get for him? Maybe it could be another Guthrie type trade — we package Rogers and another mediocre player (EY?) for a slightly better player from another team that that team wants to trade, maybe to unload some salary.
What young players do we have who are now out of options? Other than Rogers, I think that EY now is out of options. Is there anyone else?
If I am reading this correct
http://rockiesroster.com/rockies/40-man/
Guillermo Moscoso, Josh Roenicke, Esmil Rogers, Hector Gomez, Chris Nelson and Eric Young Jr are the young players that are out of options.
looks like it is officially put up or shut up time for Nelson and E.Y. Jr. I hope they both have great spring trainings and make the team.
Moscoso and Gomez both qualify for bonus fourth options under the previous CBA’s rules (that’s what the + next to their option number means). Until the full text of the new CBA is released, we won’t know this for sure, but all indication at this point is that they still do.
Unless Rogers develops a second pitch-with control-I don’t have much hope for development. We still have a plethora of outfielders,w/MLB experience, bottled up at AAA,as well as our gaggle of 2b/3b prospects.Package a couple with Rodgers and grab Neimann if its possible.Has Millwood signed with anyone yet-just asking?
Millwood signed with Seattle awhile back.
Thanks!
Considering O’Dowd’s comments in the Denver Post today about the bullpen, I would think they would give Rogers, who we all know is blessed with great stuff and cursed with inconsistency, a solid chance to make it as a 6th or even 7th inning guy. Otherwise, lacking options he is prime trade bait. I can’t see him bringing a Niemann in return though. More like a minor leaguer who actually has options.
Speaking of Mr. O’Dowds coments. Chacin needs to wake up and smell the coffee. I doubt there would be any hesitation in Mr. O’Dowd shopping him. Especially given the fact he believes that some of the others will develop into quality starters.
Of EY, Gomez, and Nelson, there’s probably only room for one of them on the Rockies’ roster (I vote for Nelson), so DOD should figure out how to trade the other two, although they won’t get much in return. Does Herrera still have options if he’s beaten out by Nelson? Moscoso and Roenicke might stick.
I thought they have been shopping EYjr. No takers. Renck reported awhile ago that EY would be traded prior to ST.
was listeing to sportstalk a few nights ago (maybe it was the KOA Monday show) and it was noted that one baseball writer said he feels Moscoso is going to be the sleeper pick of all the moves. Will be an interesting ST for sure.
Raysfan is right about Chacin needing to take care. DOD is huge on players realizing this is your job/career and you need to put forth the effort in maintaining health and improving performance. Ask Ubaldo. I know there were constant conversations with Ubaldo trying to assess what was the problem…nothing was ever said to be bothering him. Plus he had a great year and decided to spend time in Europe which was the first time he had not pitched in winter ball. That didn’t sit with with the Dan.
Some changes are coming for sure guys!
Go Rox
One of the hidden benefits of playing fantasy baseball is following guys on other teams that you would never otherwise follow. Moscoso is one of those guys for me. I had my eye on him most of last season, especially from May (when he came up) until the break. He had a few bad games after the break, giving up 5 or more runs in 3 of his 13 starts and 3 runs in 4.2 against the Angels in September. Detroit, Tampa and Boston were the teams that got him pretty good… those teams hit a lot of pitchers, and some pretty good ones last year.
Considering the rotations that have been speculated about in Denver this year, I think he does stand a pretty good chance of making some impact, especially if he somehow breaks out this year and doesn’t let the altitude get to him. Time will tell. I’d like to see him succeed, I think the guy has a high ceiling.
As for Esmil, I am intrigued by the idea of trying him out in late innings, if he shows some control and command in ST. With his stuff and raw talent, he could be a good weapon. However, if he would bring some value in return (maybe a prospect 1B who is blocked by a MLB stud) or packaged with a specialist (EY for his speed), I would favor parting with him.
One thing all of us should remember (and I’m sure most of us do, although posters on the Post site seem to forget)… other teams are not in business to take our busts, or option-less players in exchange for a stud.
One comment on Chacin… he could be this year’s Ubaldo. Meaning he could be shipped out. When DOD calls a guy out for lack of preparation, especially playing for a team that requires proper conditioning because of the altitude, anything can happen.
I have been on board with Rogers becoming a spot starter/long-mid relief guy for a while now. I would live for him to have a good ST and make it in that role. That being said, I do think Moscoso has a higher ceiling and could be a great addition to the roster as could Nelson and his versatility. Nelson at 3B, SS, 2B for the entire year could really help out defense and his offense will only get more consistent. EYJ has to be moved as they really want him to catch on at 2b but hasn’t yet, and his outfield play is hard to watch. His speed should help us move him. Hector has an upside as most teams know, but without options here, he is out of place. The fact that their options are out is our biggest weak spot. Trade value is down for both of them but if we can flip them for a guy with some options or a salary dump, I think that’s the best we can hope for.
I’m not sure where to ask this question and I have no idea how to start a thread so hopefully somebody will see this question and be able to answer it. My wife and I plan to be in the Phoenix area for a few days sometime between March 7 to 11 and would like to take in a game or so.
Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Or can I get them when I’m there since I’m not sure of the exact dates we’ll be there?
And any suggestion of where to stay? Decent place but not necessarily looking for a resort. And in addition the Rocks, I will probably have to go the Phoenix, Chandler (where ever that is) and Tempe.
Answers and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Bill, absolutely no idea, but suggest you ask the same question on other threads. Also you might directly ask Ed the Ump,Jardean, and others who I believe attend or whom have attended ST.Drop your query in enough threads and I’m sure you will get a bunch of replies.
Hey Bill, that is an excellent question – i know that there are several on here that go to ST games…i was hoping to get down there for some myself, but so far that isn’t looking good…
I don’t believe there will be any chance of games being sold out (the ones i watched last year, other than opening day at “Salt River Fields”, seemed to have many an empty seat/swatch of grass). There are several ways to buy tickets at SRF@TS (the place the Rockies train and play 1/2 their games)
PURCHASE OVER THE PHONE: 1-888-490-0383
PURCHASE ONLINE: http://www.saltriverfields.com/spring-training-tickets.aspx
Or you can just show up and purchase tickets in person…
As far as the other “away” games, i’m sure you can easily find where they are playing and do the same…i don’t think you will have a hard time finding tickets by just going down there.
Jaradeen and Gary thanks for your answers. We will probably just wing it because we are driving and with Colorado weather and March you never know when a highway can be closed for a significant amount of time. But we are looking forward warmer weather and the smell of a baseball field.
One of the biggest issues facing the Roxs are what to do with young arms that are not clear starters. Rogers, Chatwood, and Alex White come to mind as young arms that all have started in the bigs, and have had some level of success, though not huge success. All three have power arms that could make the pen this year and future years such a strong presence that they can live with starters who only go 5.2 or 6. Kind of like St. Louis last year, especially in the playoffs.
If Rogers is of interest with other clubs, what do you want in return? A similiar arm but with more options? Or some other area of need like 2B? Wonder if you could build a package around Rogers and the likes of Colvin and or EY to get a guy like Clevealnd 2B who we almost got in the Ubaldo deal.
Rogers for me is a lot like Hammel. There is clearly talent in that arm. There are times whne he is unhittable, But he seems to make a lot of mental mistakes. Given our strength of young power arms, trading Rogers to save the struggle with getting him right and to shore up a weakness, might be the best thing, for him and the Rox.
We need to trade quantity for quality. What would it add to bring in a low quality 2B to compete with other low quality 2Bs? You still max out with a low quality 2B. Same with SPs and OFs.
What I’d like to see is the Rockies package 1 OF, 1 SP, and 1 2B/UT for 1 good player in pretty much any position. Doesn’t matter. Just find a player to improve the ball club immediately. Actually I think we could afford (depth wise) to do this twice and get 2 better players.
Instead they sorta did the opposite when they traded Seth Smith.
Time to start consolidating the talent into a stronger core 25 man roster rather than thinned out over the 40 man roster.
