With the worry about pitching abating a bit, the struggle to find hits seems to be a carryover theme from last season. The work from the mound was excellent, with the only ERA blemish coming in the 4th off of Outman. After a run free first two innings from Pomeranz, which included two strikeouts, one hit and one walk, Outman got into a little bit of trouble, but minimized the damage with just a single earned run allowed. The “silver lining” of the run, which came on a shot to third, was the spectacular play Arenado made on the ball, showing his improved defense. The Rockies came back in the bottom of the 4th as Ramon Hernandez singled in Michael Cuddyer to tie up the game.
Besides the excellent pitching, and quite possibly because of the extra week of work, the catching unit really came through when needed. Hernandez went 2 for 2, driving in Cuddyer for the only run of the day. His replacement, Nieves, was stellar behind the dish as he threw out two would-be base thiefs, showing off his arm strength. Nieves also had 1 of the other 2 hits of the day, with Charlie Blackmon getting the other.
Tulo, Cargo and Dex were all silent at the plate, with Dex striking out once. Cuddyer, also quiet at the plate, did get walked, ultimately scoring thanks to the free pass and a balk.
The game went 10 innings, slightly rare for the first Spring Training game of the season, with the teams deciding to call it a day with the score a tie at 1-1.

PICS FROM EdTheUmp AT THE GAME

That’s pretty cool how you’re posting pictures! I’m jealous of Ed!
I’m jealous too!!! I’ve got him sending me pics that i’m posting with the updates i’m doing while listening…
work out those cobwebs boys. Thanks for the updates Jared and Ed!
Nice work guys – Jared & EdTheUmp (which one is Ed in the picture anyway)! I too wish that I was there in Arizona with smell of the ballfield and the crack of the bat – oh that’s right the Rockies forgot how to hit over the off season.
I had my first practice for the MABL team I just joined and now I get to come home to pics from the first Rox game of the spring!?!? Life is good
Some instead of some astute baseball observation – my takeaway from Ed’s pictures – the place looks FREAKIN’ packed! I’ll be there in two weekends – can’t wait.
Was Ed sitting in Monfort’s seat?
Ed’s tickets are REALLY good. Pretty much right behind Dick and Charlie.
I have my suspicion that Ed is a Monfort
Ed is from Greeley, so that makes a ton of sense.
Matt G,
Which team do you play for? I play in the NABA. If you pitch we could use you! Check out our website at brewersball dot com! Go Rockies!
Dex went 0-2?? Better demote him to AAA! lol. Just kidding.
jared, did I miss something? According to your box score it should be 2-1.
Probably just a typo. Thanks for the write-up.
Thanks Miketober, didn’t see that. I’ve fixed it.
SRF@TS has a capacity of 11,000…that tells you how big the crowd was(12,000+). Great atmosphere, great weather, very good pitching from the Rox and ICE COLD BREWSKIES.
Is this heaven? No, it’s Scottsdale in early Spring.
Once again, thanks all, this site is now a multi-times-a-day visit, thanks to all the hard work!
Ed, hope you weren’t sharing an ice cold brewski or 3 with Alex White last night … just online at the Denver Post:
“SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Rockies pitcher Alex White, 23, was arrested Saturday night for driving under the influence of alcohol. White was arrested by Scottsdale police at about 9:15 p.m. and released from jail at 10:50 p.m.”
Not the way to start your fight for a position on the roster. Trade tally so far:
Arrests: Pomeranz and White 2
Ubaldo 0
Drunk by 915 eh?
Celebrating that 1-1 tie with the D’backs in the spring opener.
It’s one thing to be drunk and driving and quite another to be Driving Under the Influence. He coulda had two beers/drinks and been DUI. Haven’t heard any specifics. Hey maybe they stopped him to see if was an illegal immigrant.
Good one, sabrchip. Don’t know if you’ve seen the details yet, but it ain’t good: .17 blood alcohol, so White may be charged with “extreme” DUI. White’s a big kid, so I’ll say he weighs 220 minimum. That’s 10 drinks in an hour, probably 14 or 15 drinks over 5 hours. The game ended at about 4:00 and he was pulled over at 9:15, so unless he’s pulling a John Lackey and drinking during the game, he couldn’t have been drinking for more than 5 hours.
So that’s a lot of booze. He needs a really good lawyer …
Rockies 2007: we win because we’re a bunch of clean living Christians!
Rockies 2011: this bunch of clean living Christians are a bunch of unmanly losers!
Rockies 2012: play hard, party harder! We got Pomeranz partying with the old frat boys in Mississippi, White knocking back a dozen shots, Giambi with a history of poking Clemens’ butt with steroids, and a report in October says he and Clemens “routinely” drank beer in the Yankees dugout… What’s that you say? Milton Bradley is still available?
