And so it begins…Today at 1:10 PM (MST) the Colorado Rockies will take the field to begin their 20th season as a Major League Team. 20 seasons filled with incredible moments in time and some not so great memories. For every trip to the playoff’s you can count an exit without receiving the ultimate ring. But baseball fans have short memories, for we must. In a 162 game season one can’t afford to dwell on the past for fear of missing the moment in front of them.
Today is a new moment, a time to start fresh. Fresh faces, fresh outlook. We picked up 8 players in trade (Guthrie, Moscoso, Outman, Putnam, Scutaro, Chatwood, Schmidt and Tracy) while sending away 7 via trade (Hammel, Lindstrom, Mortensen, Reynolds, Slowey, Smith and Emaus) not to mention the slew of free agent signings (Cuddyer, Blake, Canham, Davis, Ford, Gonzalez, Graham, Holm, Iribarren, Johnson, McMurray, Moyer, Perkins, Torres and Weems) and outright releases (Altobelli, Ballard, DeRatt, Graham, Squier, Weatherford and Wetzel).
It is no secret that the team has made some pretty intriguing moves to bolster their bats, but the real question is on the mound. A place where we could see over the next 4 weeks as many as 10 players vying for a spot in the top 5.
As far as today is concerned, the ball is being handed to none other than Drew Pomeranz, the key player in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade. A player who has a lot to live up to, as titles like “star of the future” and “ace in the making” followed him from Cleveland. He will start the game, most likely being held to around 50 pitches, before handing the ball off to Outman. Following Outman will be Scahill, Reynolds, Putnam and Molloken. Mike Ekstrom and Josh Roenicke may be called on as well.
So, 20 seasons, many reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Will we start slow? Will there be more injuries? Will our pitching surprise us or leave us dejected? Does it even matter, because it is Spring Training Opening Day and we’ve all been waiting for two words to be yelled out to the sold out crowd:
“PLAY BALL”!!!
We also got Nick Schmidt in the Huston Street trade and Tyler Chatwood in the Iannetta trade. Aaron Weatherford was also recently released.
