Drew Pomeranz came out of the game after two scoreless innings, citing “tightness in the right hip”.  He told MLB.COM:

I started feeling it in the warm up…I could have still pitched…It’s just an annoying little thing I felt.

He went on to say that he usually feels it the next day after Spring Training starts this season.  He mentioned to Troy Renck:

[I]t wasn’t worth the risk…I am kind of (upset) I had to come out.

Let’s hope this isn’t the start of something bigger…

============ PRE GAME ==================

For those of you with an MLBtv subscription, today will be your first “view” of the team.  The game will be shown online/phone/etc. through the mlbtv.com site and various products.  While it will be nice to watch the Rockies play, don’t expect a lot of projected opening day players on the field with this line-up:

LF Eric Young, Jr.
SS Jonathan Herrera
1B Jordan Pacheco
C Ramon Hernandez
3B Nolan Arenado
2B Chris Nelson
CF Charlie Blackmon
RF Tyler Colvin
LHP Drew Pomeranz

another 2 innings of shutout ball by Pomeranz running his scoreless streak to all 3 games in which he appeared. And this was against a one loss Dodger team made up of what looks to be most of their starting lineup. He is slowly making his way up to #2 or #3 if JT wants to alternate righty vs lefty.

Add Johnny Herrera to making a case (again) for keeping him on the roster. Clutch hitting and great defense. You can add me to the Brandon Wood fan base on starting 3b. Thinking Blake was a good chance if he could come back healthly and peform..something he hasn’t done so far. Of course my choice would be Arenado despite being a rookie with limited experience. At some point his presence is going to make a difference..why not now.

3-1 Rox on the top of 7.

    Go Rox

I’ll make the case for Johnny Sparkplug every season he is an option – love the kid and think he has what it takes…i do believe he was “driven cold” by tracy last season since he was sat down several games in a row at a time, even though he had the 3rd best batting average at the time…but, if it is between Nelson and Herrera and Nelson is out of options and Herrera isn’t then I’d take Nelson, just because I like him as well…I love going to the games and yelling, “Johnny” and then when he looks saying, “we love you sparkplug” – i’ve done it twice and he always smiles pretty big…i walked past him after a game coming out of the locker room and he was very cool – right behind him was CarGo and I was pretty much in awe – he is bigger in person, that is for sure…i wanted to reach out and slap his arm, but didn’t want to touch him for fear of changing his luck :-)

Pomeranz looked great, but came out early…they are saying “tightness in right hip”…the thing is, he said he felt it during warm-up and still pitched that good!!! This kid is legit, indians gotta be bummed…

Go Jonny! None of those guys will beat him out. He may frustrate people due to lesser talent, but his heart makes up for it. My favorite guy. Wish he could be the “clubhouse leader.”

Re Pomeranz: a hip is a lot less scary than a shoulder or elbow. Everybody cross yer fingers!

I like Jonny, but even though his production is ok it seems like the Rockies don’t win with him out there.

ha! i’m sure he wasn’t the key to their losses, although i’m sure Jose Lopez would like the team to think that!

The more reports you hear coming out of Scottsdale, but the more the writing is on the wall that Casey Blake won’t be on this team. You are starting to hear the name of Brandon Wood being thrown about quite a bit lately. Would the Rox brass be willing to go with some combination of Wood/Nelson/Pacheco to start the season at 3rd and see which player grabs the bull by the horns until Arenado is ready? Should be a very interesting next few weeks as we see this unfold. Not sure when the cutoff date is when the Rox need to decide on Blake, as his contract isn’t guaranteed.

Pretty sure Blake’s contract becomes guaranteed if he makes the opening day 25 man roster. Despite all the reports I would put a lot of money on it that Blake is your Opening Day third baseman.

He may win the position yet, but the fact that his contract is only guaranteed if he makes the rosters supports that he won’t be here long. The Rockies aren’t in the position to carry his salary if he can’t be trusted.

Keith Dugger says Pomeranz’s tightness isn’t a big concern…it felt better after icing and he looks to be on track to pitching sunday, as long as he can get his side work in over the next couple of days…they will evaluate him at 2:00 today, so there might be different news, but it seems to be a minor thing they aren’t worried in…
