One of the beauties of baseball lies in the pitching rotation. With five starters, it is almost like you get to “start over” every 6 games. Not happy with how some of your guys did the last week? No problem, consider it all forgotten as your Ace takes the mound. Wish you had someone stable in your rotation that you can rely on? Just wait, it’ll come. That is, unless you don’t have anybody in your rotation that can be considered stable.
Fortunately for us, we do. Strangely for us, we don’t have to wait another start to get our Ace up, with the off day the powers that be decided to skip a starter and head back to the beginning. While many (all?) would like to have our 5th guy out there today, knowing that Pomeranz has the type of stuff we really need right now, nobody will be complaining when Jeremy Guthrie takes the mound today against The Giants.
The Giants will have their Ace on the mound as well, with Tim Lincecum coming off a terrible outing with a line after five and a 1/3 innings he gave up six hits, five earned and all of that helps him start the season with a nice little 8.44 ERA (oh, and the loss).
Guthrie, on the other hand, went seven innings only surrendering three runs on four hits giving him a 3.86 ERA to start the season.
Throw into the mix the fact that Timmy doesn’t like to pitch at Coors (and really doesn’t like the “juiced balls”) and we got ourselves a potential fun game tonight!

It’s days like this that we’ll really miss Seth Smith, who always hit Timmy well.
Lineup:
Scoots
Freezing Fowl
Unload the CarGo
Too Low
Vacuum Cleaner
Buddy
Hernandez
Black Hole Nellie
Gutsy
We either dig deeper into a hole or come out with avengence.
I don’t foresee a 3-2 or 4-3 game here. One team’s winning this thing by 4 or 5 runs. Who will it be?
If it’s the Giants up by four-five runs, then I’m switching to the Nuggets game tonight.
Same lineup as the home opener, hope the guys go out and show that they are focused and looking for revenge, rockies win 9-4
Rockies 8-3, plus, I never want to hear JT say “this team is going to hit”!!!
Guys, saw some comment in twitter about a tornado in Denver.
Are you ok?
Cesar we had sirens about 11:00 am but no action I know of– I live downtown).
I guess the sirens went off and there was a tornado warning but the weather is not real bad. The real bad weather is in southern CO.
Based on the pregame comments, I bet Mr. Ringolsby is probably glad ITR is not up now. He seems to be of the opinion that fans need to slow down and take a breath. He also said there is no reason to rush Nolan Arenado until he is ready.
I do agree with him about the Dodgers and although he picked them as the team to beat, I picked them to come in 2nd.
Funny, not one of the pre-game guys picked the Rockies to win the West.
Well, I just bought the MLB.tv package and this is going to be my first season. Very excited to finally watch Rockies games the whole season
That’s really cool Cesar. I just got it for the first time myself. I’ve already enjoyed watching games besides the Rocks.
Nice hit cargo!
Wow who was that batting 4th?
How about run on contact? It finally worked out! And first time all year the Rox strike first.
Nice hit nelly! Agree with George that was needed
I really want Nelson to earn the 2b spot for next year
No chat tonight?
Ian missing the chat tonight easier on the iPod than this
Offense!!!!!
Now THIS is fun!
Not fun anymore.
This is NOT fun.
Dang
Choking it away
Rockies doing their best to please the fans, Giants fans that is.
Gotta love our rockies
Unbelievable…
Tied up. Unbelievable. This is a manic experience watching Rox this year. I’m either in despair or flying high.
Last year the Rockies played horrible during fan appreciation week. This year is the year of the fan. So far we are playing horrible. I’m not feeling very appreciated
I’m not watching the game, but just tracking it on the computer. Why did they put Reynolds in instead of another reliever?
Unbelievable. Two 7 run games to the Giants? I wonder if they have it in them to recover and take this game.
Boppers need good abs here
Too many sf fans
Cargo…lol love his desire but needs to be careful
OK, baseball 101 here. When I was in little league, and I never got any further, my coach said don’t dive into first base. You actually lose speed when you dive, so always run through first. Can anyone tell me if that is correct or not?
yes …
Another out at the plate on the contact play. Funny thing, when I was a kid, I was taught that you do not try to advance from 2B or 3B on a ball hit to the left side of the infield. Or when on 3B, you don’t advance on a sharply-hit ball to the right side of a pulled-in infield. Were my coaches all full of bleep? I don’t think so.
that would not be a running on contact play. Running on contact is a HUGE gamble. Some coaches believe in it. Some don’t. I’m sure you heard in the 1st game Tony LaRussa’s thoughts on defending against it. All gambles.
Let’s take that (expletive deleted) contact play out of the playbook…it simply doesn’t work often enough with this team.
too many pull hitters on this team for that play to work consistently.
I posted the same thing after one Houston game.It doesn’t seem to be a good idea when it works once a season.
Reynolds really needs a swing and miss pitch.
what a crazy game so far! so far in this game you can question the rockies heart they are refusing to lose this game
Double-tacos?
hey meant to say you cant question the rockies heart wow! voice text sucks! beautiful bunt by eyj! My man!
That speed is such a weapon!
Another “miss” IMHO is when a pitcher is at bat with bases loaded and one out (especially a pitcher from AL) he should be told NOT to swing. He might get lucky with a walk (and run scored). Worst case is a strikeout but you turn the lineup over. When Guthrie was up and obviously swinging I said he would GIDP and he did. It’s those little management decisions that get me crazy.
Totally agree. Or how bout a bunt?
Bunt,BUNT you say Prog.On a Jim Tracy team.I’m surprised when he allows a sac bunt.
Wow! RISP! That’ the way spped works. woot! Scut-aro!
Nothing better than a sweet lefty swing
that a boy cargo!!!!
every day in baseball you see something you have never seen before. wow.
Ummmmmm…
I think the team is awake now. Let’s see if they can keep it up.
This game is crazy
Sorry, only have access to gameday. Why the delay on the outcome of Hernandez’s hit?
LOL because there were like 3 or 4 mistakes on it by the Giants absolute little league.
Two hits for Nelson tonight. You know what that means, right? Tomorrow he sits do he can rest.
LOL! Yep,the dreaded day game after night game.
My favorite baseball games are intense, stressful pitchers duels. My 2nd faves are games like tonight. Almost drunk from gorging on runs and hits! btw… the Rox still should have made about 4 or 5 outs on the basepaths, so it isn’t quite Nirvana yet! lol
What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on at 20th and Blake…madness…
Offense should be like this every game!!!
16-7, WOW, everyone is doing a great job.
BTW, the slide of Ramon Hernandez in thrid and the one of Scutaro in the 3rd inning in first base. This game is been played with a lot of intensity.
GO ROCKIES!
Yeah. Scoots’ was sweet. Missed the other.
Look at eyj get fired up! Love it!
His inninng was better than alot of the guys first 4 games.
LOL gameday still stuck on Hernandez’s AB.
Here’s how gameday scored the play
R Hernandez singled to center, T Helton scored, M Cuddyer to second, M Cuddyer to third, R Hernandez to second on error by first baseman B Pill.M Cuddyer scored, R Hernandez to third on error by first baseman B Pill.
A bitter Pill for the Giants.
Thanks. Yes, so fast Gmeday couldn’t keep up. Too cool! Go Rox!
“I don’t foresee a 3-2 or 4-3 game here. One team’s winning this thing by 4 or 5 runs. Who will it be?”
Good call Prog!!!
I didn’t expect 3 of those games in 1 night.
Poor Affeldt having to come back out.
Chacin’s ERA is 9.00.
Tim Lincecum’s is 12.91.
Wish they left Belisle in 1 more inning since he was warm and had such an easy 6th. Agree with George and Drew here. Need Chatwood to finish the game. Not a good beginning.
Rox need to do some work tomorrow. Too many times last year we score ten runs and the next day we look listless at the plate and get lucky to have even five hits.
Esp day after night. I may go.
Would I be a total idiot to suggest sitting some regulars going into the bottom of the 7th as the batting order dictates, give some guys AB’s and some playing time? Seems like the air has somewhat come out of the bats (it’s only natural), and there is no reason to get anybody hurt. Jonny Herrera, anyone? Giambino anyone? Colvin anyone? Willin anyone? (let Pacheco sit just in case) It’s only a 9 run lead after all, and if (oops, make it 8!) the Giants come back, the Rox really are in trouble! Just a thought. I’d do it. I’d also not do the contact play, so I must be at least as smart as Jim Tracy! lol
I don’t think 8 runs is enough in this game.
If it’s not, then we have some really big problems in Lodo.
Just finished watching the game (i’m downtown Manila flying out in the morning and had to MLBtv it – yes, Love MLBtv for this very reason)…and that was my thought…instead of having a bunch of bench guys start a game (usually on Sundays), find a time exactly like the 8th tonight that you could bring them in to get work and rest your starters…that is when it should take place – on a blowout…
The only thing I love about them staying in as long as they did (except for Tulo) is the fact that they get to savor a win like this and it has to be as fun for them out there playing as it is for us watching…they need to have fun playing a game and they’ve earned being out there kicking Giant trash!
So, leave them in for fun or pull them for rest – win/win either way!
MAN THAT WAS A FUN GAME!!!
Chatwood reminds me of somewhere between Lindstrom and Street. Delivery starts slow then snaps into action.
Schierholtz has gone all James Loney on the Rockies at Coors. They really need to rethink how the approach him at the plate.
Give Ubaldo a call tonight, and follow his advice tomorrow! (kidding!)
Getting Loney should be our back-up 1B plan.
Nobody likes a guy who jumps in with the “I told you so,” but I can’t resist: has anyone noticed that Dex is 3 for 5 with 2 doubles tonite?
Here’s what I wrote on the sabermetrics thread this afternoon when some folks wondered whether it might be time to sit perennial slow-starter Fowler:
“So it is theoretically possible that there is such a thing as a true “second half player,” and it’s theoretically possible that Dex is one of them. But we just can’t tell, and as I noted in many posts, there’s a real danger in jumping to that conclusion: you just may bench (or send down) Dex just at the moment he’s about to start hitting again.”
Thank goodness Jim Tracy doesn’t think that way (at least not this one time)!
Well, don’t jump to conclusions. A single game does not make a season. However since I am a Dex fan, I hope Dex keeps hitting.
EVERYBODY hit today. Nice to see that. Strange stuff. Staying up just long enough to listen to the press conference. Catch yall tomorrow.
Welcome back Jared, a nice pleasant surprise when you landed in the U.S. and checked the score on the smartphone yes? :=)
Actually i’m not home yet – i posted the pre-game last night (my time) and went to bed and when I woke up I had to drive several hours to Manila where i’m staying the night before tomorrow’s flight…i JUST finished the game (didn’t have a chance to watch it earlier) and will do the pre-game for tomorrow (and a post Marc sent over) and off to bed before my flight…i have a lay-over in Detroit where i’ll be watching the game on my laptop (after it is over that is) at the airport before my last leg to SLC…
I’m not the kind that checks the score on his phone, i actually go back and watch the whole thing…i have for years – which is why i’m perfect for this site, have only missed watching/listening to about 5 full games a year for the past 5 years i’d say…before that I didn’t have way to watch them regularly so i’d follow on my phone when I couldn’t see them…
Jaredean, welcome home. The way your last couple of weeks have gone I hope the weather[the first in 2 months]didn’t cause flight problems.Maybe u being in country/colorado was the good luck and positive energy “the boys” needed!
It was nice to see the boys scrath out a run and make the Beard throw 24 pitches. Good finish.
I hope they don’t go out and get shutout today
Some thoughts about last night:
Offensively: BRILLIANT!
Defensively: GOOD!
Pitching: NEED IMPROVEMENT!
Everyone was on fire: Almost every hitter in the starting lineup got a 2-hit game. The exception was Guthrie (obviously) and Scutaro who only hit safely 1 time but managed to score 3 runs.
I hope to repeat this season infinitely that Scutaro is a great addition to this squad. He walked in his first AB after being 0-2, got a hit and later got first base in what I would call half an error by Burriss half a hit by Scutaro for that slide in first.
Well, CarGo is as agressive as always. He swong at a lot of pitches outside the zone, but today his contact was very solid.
However, not everything was perfect. To lose a 6-run lead in the 4th inning is an alert. Thank God the offense took a step up!
GO ROCKIES!
Wonderful, I didn’t want to jinx last night in my first night back and chatting. Well done on the site Jaredean. Very happy that you have done this. Also good to see all of you still around.
Nice work by the team bouncing back in the YeaR of the Fan. Tracy scolded me on Twitter last night for saying I was overreacting to the 7 run 4th inning and the season so far was equivalent to one half of one football game. Nice to see the 2nd half of that ‘football game’ start off then well for the Rox last night from bottom of the 4th inning on.
I will be around again. Have been a little too busy to have a life for the past 6 months with new baby and new computer system at my office. Thankfully, I have the former ITR guys and now we are RoxWalkOff folks to keeping us sane.
Here’s hoping for more success to the Rockies the rest of the way.
Cesar, I like that Venezuelan perspective. I agree that Scutaro was an excellent addition. I think he’s had a couple rough patches adjusting to 2B and timing with Tulo, but he’s an excellent natural fielder so I’m not concerned at all about that. Can’t believe the Red Sox let him go for essentially nothing.
I’ve notices Scutaro’s angles throwing to first have been a little head scratching at times. Todd shouldn’t need to stretch toward the pitchers mound to backhand a throw from a 2B.
Well, I think Scutaro won’t take long to adjust to 2nd base. Just because he is a natural 2nd baseman, and a couple of years ago he adjusted to play at SS.
In 2006, he won a title with the Leones del Caracas in the Venezuelan Winter League and then the “Serie del Caribe” playing 2nd base. Three years later, he started to play as a regular SS in the MLB for the Bluejays, before, he played in 2B, 3B and even as a LF in Oakland and Toronto.
he is very smooth..don’t think it would matter where he played..certainly has the arm strengh and smooth. Similar defensively (very good) as Ellis was with us last year but Scut a much better bat.
great sign for Rox
Go Rox
Wow what a great night, so the big difference I saw last night was the team kept the pedal to the floor. That team last year would of folded after falling behind 6-7. Way to go Rockies and keep the pedal to the floor today!!! My question is will it be the “B” squad today to rest the starters, as it is a day game following a night game? Hope not.
ROOT had a quick interview with Jim Tracy after the Rox reclaimed the lead, and they made the exact same comment to Jim Tracy, and he agreed with them. I thought that was an eye opener.
I’m referring to the pedal to the floor last night part, not the B squad part.
Earlier I compared Nate Schierholtz to James Loney as a Rockie killer.
Nate Schierholtz
20 career HR, 7 HR vs the Rockies, 7 in Coors Field.
James Loney
67 career HR, 15 HV vs Rockies, 9 in Coors Field.
Hey all, so glad this game ended up the way it did – i was very excited to run Timmy (my least favorite NL player by far) off the mound as quickly as we did, but when I saw Guts get send out right after that I was hoping it didn’t turn into 2011 Rox…and, alas, it didn’t! Score one for the good guys!
Can someone pick up the slack while i’m heading home…all you have to do is post a pre-game little blurb with line-ups if possible and then post-game if you want, but we can just have the pre-game cover it (you can go back and “amend it”)…
If someone can do that for the next 2 games that will really help me since i’ll be sitting somewhere on a delta plane or in an airport or hugging my kids…i’ll be watching the games, but, like last nights game that i just finished watching, i’ll be too late to really post anything…that would really help…
Also sorry for not getting the chat going…the last couple of days and the next couple of days have really thrown off my schedule, but I hope to have chat going for Sunday’s game and then from then on out for most of the rest of the games…possibly this Saturday…
I will be posting some awesome stats Marc Stout just sent me that I really love getting and posting, so look for that in a few minutes and then I have to go to bed!!!
GO ROX…man, I can’t get over how much fun that was!!!
JD-hope its not a sign-first game I haven’t logged on to RWO during the game (busy with the little guy) and look at the result! Have fun enjoying the family man, that’s more important than RWO!
Let’s do it again boys!
Certainly one of the most entertaining games I have been to in a long time. Seeing “the freak” get shelled was nice. JT had a good comment after that as long as the team laid off the balls out of the zone and made him throw strikes, he felt they could hit. They didn’t chase many bad pitches.
Another really good thing to see was their approach to hitting. Didn’t see hardly anyone uppercutting …mostly driving the ball into gaps, putting the ball in play. That is the formula they need.
and for Pooter- I was impressed (softened my stance) with EY2 offensive approach. Still strikes terror in my heart thinking of having him in the outfield but he may be figuring the game out a little more than previous years.
Go Moyer and Go ROX!
