The “A” team.wouls like to see Colvin getting more time,at least against right handers on the road.Dex seems to have more “pop”lefty at Coors. Also, weren’t Dex’s home/road splits awful last year?
Please take Dexter out of the lineup! Put in Colvin!!!
Obviously you haven’t been to the Jim Tracy school of managing…Dex is cold, Colvin is hot…thus, today’s line-up…
Wow, 2 negative votes. Those must have. One before the game
If you take Dexter out of the lineup too frequently, he’ll have trouble finding his groove. And I thought most RWOers were against “tinkering” with the lineup.
IMHO, Colvin is just perfect where he is at – play any OF and 1B spelling whomever needs a break. That should be enough to get him 300-400 ABs this year. Just like EY is perfect in his own role as a “speed kills” player.
Unrelated topic – Ian Stewart is batting below the Mendoza line as of today. Last night he was replaced by Mike Mather who had a walkoff against the Cardinals. The day before (Sunday) Stewart struck out three times in five PAs. I’m liking the trade more and more. Colvin took some lessons before the season, made the adjustments, and came back to the Colvin of 2010. Stewart still hasn’t figured out how to adjust to MLB pitching after five plus years. Plus DJ LeMahieu is still with the Rox while Casey Weathers was released.
Another unrelated topic – for anyone with Twitter, there is a fantastic “person” to follow: @PR_Prospects Someone from Purple Row tweets updates on our prospects all the way down to Rookie League. By the way, I am @ITRrockymtnhigh on Twitter. I don’t do much tweeting, mostly just read them.
Another note: There was a clause added to the new CBA just signed over the winter. For doubleheaders, teams are allowed to add a 26th man to the active roster. Troy Renck tweeted that Zach Putnam will be activated for the DH tomorrow. I’m assuming he can be sent back without time restriction on when he can be recalled back up. Hope Greg Stanwood can stop by here and answer this question (or anyone who knows the answer).
RMH, excellent comments…a lot of meat in here – i agree with you about Colvin, all kidding aside, that he has been blossoming in the spot he is in right now and playing everyday might add some pressure that would change that. I am concerned with Dex going everyday because his “trigger” in the past has been the demotion to AAA “waking him up”…
Didn’t know about the doubleheader rule – i’m in a meeting, so don’t have time to research – but would love to know the specifics…
I’ll start following those twitter accts…thanks
Dexter should never be in a starting major league lineup. He’s horrible!!! Start the better player Tracy!!! That’s Colvin btw
I’m on the Colvin bandwagon. My concern at first was defense. But he really tracks balls well in the OF. Play him!
CBA must be taking listens from Congress on how to craft unwieldly complex rules and regulations. How did MLB survive for 100+ years w/o this rule?
That’s lessons.Alcohol rears its ugly head once again.Sorry.
oh, and chat is live for tonight
Great move??? After failing to get any outs vs the two hitters he faced Sunday, Brothers was somewhat questionably called on by Tracy tonight with Rox ahead 2-1 in 7th after another gutty performance by Moyer.
Brothers pitched to four batters,,,double, single, double, walk…very likely costing Rox a win. This was even more baffling given that of those four hitters only the first was a lefty. It looks like management will have to assess where Brothers fits, certainly not as the setup guy as planned.
Oh, and Rockies have one hit since the first.
And Brothers pitched to 2 on Sunday: walk, single.
That’s 6 in a row.
Not sure who you can go to other than Brothers. That’s the problem with having only 3 relievers you trust now, although Brothers is losing that trust real fast. Why’d Tracy give up on Matt Reynolds?
Eyj had a chance to show what he has in this game and he totally flopped I feel like that was a really big at bat for eyj bullpen needs to shrug this one off! they are a good group
Hate how this robbed Cargo of his impressive game. Reminds me of how Fuentes choked away 2 or 3 awesome games that Tulo was the hero in 2007.
Sorry guys, just finished the game and I’m beat (and depressed). I can do a post game in the morning unless someone gets one up before I get to it.
Payback is a bitch eh.Addressed to all you SU Barmes haters.Let’s hope he goes 0 for doubleheader today.
Yep, and I am still proudly the official chairman of the SU Barmes must be Super Utility band wagon. However I knew that SU Barmes would have a great game against the Rockies, but I have no clue why the Rockies were still pitching to him in that (homer) situation. And those three hits likely doubled his hitting production for the 2012 season and he is just now approaching the Mendoza line.
Let me count the reasons – I would take ANY of Scutaro, Nelson, Herrera, LeMaheiu, Pacheco or EY2 (yup even EY2) as my starting second baseman BEFORE playing Barmes as such. That’s how much I love SU Barmes as a super utility player!
Wow, many on here and ITR were exhalting Brothers as the heir apparent closer. A few bad outings and????????????
Yep he is in a rut. Maybe he is just another LH pitcher like Franklin and will blossom once on another team?
He will be fine.
But Barmes was such a nice guy. And if I remember correctly didn’t he kill us in Houston one game last year?
Since Brothers obviously needs to step back into lower leverage situations until he gets it together, let me put in my pitch for Matt Reynolds. We’ve been hearing about how he isn’t as effective against lefties. That’s where stats (specifically, the misuse of stats) hurt rather than help. Superficially, that looks to be the case. Last year:
vs. RH: .215 BA against
vs. LH: .280 BA against
Plus he allowed 6 HRs against lefties, 4 against righties (in general, HRs were his problem last year)
This is almost certainly the classic “small sample size” situation. Look deeper:
vs. RH: 7.01 K/9, 4.21 BB/9
vs. LH 10.8 K/9, 2.16 BB/9
So what explains that reverse batting average/HR split? Probably just bad luck over a very small number of batters faced — he only threw 50 innings total, 25 vs. each righties and lefties. Righties had an average on balls in play (BABIP) of .232, lefties were at .344. (League average is right around .300). That’s almost certainly just bad luck, as pitchers have very limited ability to control BABIP. As for those HRs, yeah, he obviously left too many balls up, but some of that “reverse split” thing is almost surely bad luck too.
So … the stats don’t give us any reason to believe what we’ve been hearing, that he’s “more effective against righties than lefties.” He’s actually been really good against lefties but for some bad luck in a very small sample size. So don’t shy away against using him as a lefty specialist. He’s been very solid since he got called up, and he’s clearly the best option right now (righty or lefty) after Betancourt and Belisle. Use him!
Excellent stats, Ag, about MReynolds.
If memory serves me, Nelson made the last out of the 6th inning. I thought Moyer should have gone out for the 7th inning. Then we could have gone Belisle-Betancourt to close out the game. All in hindsight. But I’m a believer in that if the SP is throwing well, keep him going until PH replaces him.
I think the Barmes breakthrough is part of the “kill your previous team at all odds” – we saw it with the Hawpe HR that sunk us against the Padres last year – we see it almost every time CarGo comes up against the Diamondbacks…you really want to play well against a team that didn’t believe in you and Barmes did just that last night.
Personally, I think Barmes was the scapegoat of having 7 players who were underperforming.
Brad Hawpe
Clint Barmes
Ian Stewart
Chris Iannetta
Dexter Fowler
to lesser extent Helton and Smith
Remember FISSH? The only reason it wasn’t FISSHHB is because Hawpe and Barmes were already cast off.
From a 8th hole hitter, do you really expect more than a slick fielding 2B with occasional pop? The problem is Ian Stewart and Chris Iannetta were also 8th hole hitters. Never mind that they actually have the unfulfilled expectations of being more than that…
So we cast off Barmes instead of those two. A lot of help that did. LOL 2011 was a roaring success, right? Now Iannetta and Stewart are gone too.
