Welcome home guys, here’s your line-up. Herrera, you’re gonna be playing third tonight…and, oh yeah, Dex you will be hitting eighth.

The team is looking to get off to a strong start at home as they welcome the New York Mets. With Nelsons struggles on the road (0-13) it was time to bring in the “hot bat” of Johnny “Sparkplug” Herrera. Herrera, who is batting .389, also has a strong glove at the hot corner.

Dexter “has struggled mightily since the beginning of Spring Training” Fowler has been moved down to eighth in the line-up, and the team is hoping he wont be inviting his .222 batting average to join him. His .311 OBP looks awfully meager when compared to his .363 OBP at the end of last season.

Here is the rest of the line-up for the 6:40 PM first pitch:

Scutaro 2B
Herrera 3B
CarGo  LF
Tulo  SS
Helton  1B
Cuddyer  RF
Hernandez  C
Fowler  CF
Pomeranz  P

Count me as unconvinced. Nelson’s hitting .300+ at home, .000 on the road. So sit him on the road, play him at home. Why wait until they return home and then sit him. That said I think Herrara’s a better #2 hitter than Dex. But if Scutaro doesn’t get start getting on more than it doesn’t matter.

Frankly I think they should have kept Pacheco here. He can hit and he can play 4 positions so in my opinion he would become at least an adequate defensive 3rd baseman fairly quickly. And his bat is better than any other 3rd baseman they in the system with the exception of Arrendo. I guess. I haven’t seen him but everybody says he’s the real deal.

    Sigh.

Deja vu with the Herrera/Fowler things. Because that worked out so well last year:

    Herrera, April 2011: 824 OPS
    Herrera, May 2011: 608 OPS

But this year is different! Jonny has a new approach at the plate or something! I have an idea: maybe if a bad player has a good 18 ABs (that’s what Jonny has so far this year) it proves that he’s really a good player!

(Of course, I do think Herrera should be starting at 3B, but that’s only because Nelson has been awful at the plate AND in the field.)

Pacheco dreamers: yeah, he’s hitting at Colo Springs so far, but check out Purple Row’s last minor league report. One of the comments (from a guy who watched the game) tells us it was another rough night at 3B for Pacheco. I just don’t see that experiment happening.

My short-term stop-gap pray-for-Arenado pick: LeMahieu. He’s had trouble at 2B this year, but he’s got a rep as a solid defensive SS (and the conversion to 3B is more natural), and there’s really no reason to think Pacheco will be better offensively.

Did you folks see the Nats called up Bryce Harper? 19 years old, not nearly as ready as Arenado. No pressure or anything, Nolan…

The difference this season from last is that his mother was battling cancer during the season and that really distracted him…it wasn’t his approach, etc…he started strong and then with the family distractions lost his focus (http://tinyurl.com/heRoxrera) she ended up dying in November and he took Winter ball off…

Not saying he wont struggle, have more issues, etc…but I really think he gets a lot of the short end of the stick with the fans…he and EY2 have proven they have a lot to give the team and so far they have done better than most on the field each day…

But, take all of that with a grain of salt – i am a “sparkplug apologist” :-)

Just gonna throw this out there: Pomeranz is hurt.

I think we sold Cleveland damaged goods in Ubaldo, but I’m afraid we may have gotten damaged goods back in return. Pomeranz was advertised as having a 93-95 mph fastball. This year before tonight: average was 90. Tonight: 86-88. I hope I’m wrong, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s the next guy in line for TJ or some other surgery.

Geez. Now we lose two fifths of our rotation in one night – Guthrie and Pomeranz. Wish one of them was Chacin instead of either of them.

Moscosco? NO! I prefer Chatwood and White. But I think they had recent outings and are unavailable this soon. Mets are going to be teeing off on Moscoso with big flies. I think we should call back Putnam as well and drop Escalona or Roenicke to reinforce the bullpen.

If baseball fates prevail, you can expect a 2-1 nail bitter tomorrow!Wasn’t it just about this time last year when the rotation started falling like miller moths? We really need guys to step up,not fall down.Baseball is so notorious for weird injuries.Add biking DL to Venison overload and car door finger slam!
