Ian Kennedy stifled the Colorado Rockies on five hits over six innings, striking-out 12, and Jason Kubel drove in five, two on a third-inning home-run, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated Colorado 10-0 Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix.  Arizona pounded-out 17 hits against three Colorado pitchers and took back the game they lost to the Rockies Monday, with the rubber match in the three-game series scheduled for Wednesday evening at 7:40 MDT.

Jeremy “Gopher-Ball” Guthrie started for Colorado and surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in just 3 1/3 innings.  Arizona second-baseman Aaron Hill drove in the first two runs in the second on a homer to left with Lyle Overbay on base from a force.  Kubel’s big fly in the third made it 4-0.  In the fourth after Kennedy struck-out leading-off, Gerardo Parra, who went 4 for 5, singled and took third on a double by Willie Bloomquist.  Kubel then singled to center, driving-in Parra and Bloomquist.  Kubel moved to third on a single by catcher Miguel Montero and scored on a base hit from Chris Young that ended Guthrie’s night. Matt Reynolds came-on and got Lyle Overbay to ground into a double-play to close-out the inning.

Guillermo Moscoso entered in the fifth and turned-in three respectable innings, but ran out of gas in the eighth, surrendering three more as Parra homered leading-off, Bloomquist singled and scored on a Kubel triple, and Kubel trotted home on a Montero sacrifice fly.  After Young flew-out Moscoso staggered to the finish, walking Overbay and Josh Bell before finally striking-out Aaron Hill to get back to the dugout.

Colorado managed only one credible threat in the game, loading the bases in the second on a Jordan Pacheco single, Wilin Rosario double, and walk to DJ Le Mahieu ahead of Guthrie, who struck-out. Kennedy then struck-out Dexter Fowler to put-down the threat.

The Rockies run-out Josh Outman (0-1, 5.63), making his second start since replacing fellow left-hander Jamie Moyer.  Outman is expected to be limited to 75-80 pitches as he continues to stretch himself into a starting role.  He’ll face Dbacks lefty Wade Miley (6-2, 2.72), who’s been Arizona’s best starter in 2012.  TV is on Root, radio 850 KOA.

Rockies Looking for Second in Phoenix
Guthrie Needs to Tune it Up

Jordan Pacheco has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games and led the Colorado Rockies into their recent surge.  The Colorado offense now includes seven players with hitting streaks of 5 games or more and has produced 61 runs over the eight game stretch.  The Rockies look to take the middle game of the three game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Chase Field to secure the series.

They’ll send right-hander Jeremy Guthrie (3-3, 5.48) out against Arizona’s Ian Kennedy (4-5, 4.26), also a righty.  Kennedy contended for the NL Cy Young Award in 2011, but is off to a patchy start in 2012. Guthrie was acquired by Colorado late in the winter to anchor the starting rotation, provide veteran leadership, and soak-up innings.  It hasn’t worked-out.  Guthrie went seven in last Thursday’s victory over Houston, but allowed 5 runs and 12 hits, scattering base-runners all about.  Tonight he’s following tight, concise performances by Christian Friedrich and Alex White and needs to extend the trend.

Colorado MFL Jim Tracy is sticking with the hot lineup that prevailed last night while Arizona’s Kirk Gibson switches it up:

CF        Dexter Fowler
SS        Marco Scutaro
LF        Carlos Gonzalez
RF        Michael Cuddyer
1B        Todd Helton
3B        Jordan Pacheco
C          Wilin Rosario
2B        DJ LeMahieu
P          Jeremy Guthrie
RF        Gerardo Parra
SS        Willie Bloomquist
LF        Jason Kubel
C          Miguel Montero
CF        Chris Young
1B        Lyle Overbay
3B        Josh Bell
2B        Aaron Hill
P          Ian Kennedy

Same old with the Chat. All the wisdom back to Saturday. Jared emailed me this morning and told me what I’m doing wrong, but here’s this: I’m not!

Hey everybody thanks for the kind comments. Not looking for sympathy or praise, just wondering where the H everyone was.

Doing something a lot more fun than watching the Rockies. Even if they are FINALLY playing decent ball. I think we all know it won’t last.

I guess so. I am being harsh on Guthrie. I like those 160 minute 4-0 games like Friedrich delivered last night. With Guthrie it’ll run 4 hours and I’ll be up writing until 3 am.

Awful. So awful probably will have to eat his salary entirely just to get a minor prospect.

Guys, I’ve heard completely different comments tonight and last night from the ROOT talking heads about what %age of first round picks either make the bigs, or don’t. Didn’t see much of tonight’s debacle, so may have missed the definitive answer. Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

I think it’s 19% or 32% or 12% or something. a you’re right they keep changing the %. Drew was right (for a change) when he said it’s no an exact science. And when they pick a high school player, he might not even sign. He might go to college. And you lose the pick. In hockey you take him, he’s stays with the team that drafts him.

The Rox were part of the blow-out shut-out club last night.
Yanks won 7-0, Braves won 11-0, Cubs 10-0, DBacks 10-0. It must have been the transit of Venus.

Aside from the fielding, which I think looked decent in the 6 innings I watched, this is probably among the worst we’ve seen this team this year.

If this game happened 2, 3 weeks ago we would have been screaming that we hit rock bottom.

Guthrie is awful, and much like we did when Moyer was on the hill, the offense seems to sputter behind him.

DOD, aka “the best GM in baseball”, did not follow his own advice following 2011 regarding “no more mediocre overpaid veterans” and brought in the very definition of 1 in Guthrie.

With the Rockies’ win on Monday, i suffered to watch them get destroyed by Arizona. After 3 pitchers, and 9 innings i couldn’t handle it any longer. Guthrie has got to get his act together and start pitching. And we’ve got to get some hits, if him and Pacheco can do some tweaking, and get on their game tonight, Colorado has a chance to get this W.
