Do you guys think Nelson and LeMehieu are adequate at 2B to start next year? I think unless the Rox make major upgrade (meaning much better than Ellis or Scutaro) they deserve it. Focus on other areas.
Agree Prog.Enough all ready. The five year revolving door there has been a distraction and a big waste of money.Nelson has made some gems recently and BA is improving. Its pitching-pitching-pitching,and more pitching as the main focus until next spring. The bullpen is solid, and better than I expected, but something must be done[blockbuster]for a starter or half a dozen.Garza, and Dempster are supposedly being shopped.Greinke maybe in final year.I’m ready for a mini Neagle type deal.Todd’s salary is going away after one more year which should free up some bucks for a 3-5 year deal.
No, no and no – Nelson & LeMaheiu are not the answers at second base!
DanO should have resigned Mark Ellis, but nope that was the way too easy to have done. Now Scutaro should be resigned for $7.5 over two years. That’s the market and he is an excellent MLB professional, something we have rarely had at second base over the years.
Rumor has it the Rockies never made a free agent offer to MIllwood either. Now is it just me or would you rather pay Millwood $4.0m or pay Guthrie $8.0m while losing both Hammel and Lindstrom. Nope signing Millwood was too easy to do as well!
Failing an attempt to resign Scutaro, the Rockies should open the 2013 season with Pacheco at second base with Arenado at third base. These guys are (or will be) very good MLB hitters and their feilding will be just fine over the long term.
I’m sure I’m not the first to post this thought…
In light of the hideous starting pitching for the Rockies, I’ve kind of kept an eye on some other guys who used to wear purple, and am curious as to what the difference is in their games this year.
Jason Hammel… one hit, complete game shutout tonight.
Franklin Morales, great success (and spot start on Sunday) with the Bosox (in their bandbox).
Felipe Paulino. Kevin Millwood. Yes, Ubaldo Jimenez. Even Jamie Wright, who has put together a decent career since leaving Denver.
Is it the altitude? The size of the ballpark? No.
Think it might be coaching? How can Hammel be worth letting go here, then be a solid starter in Camden Yards? How can Paulino go to KC and become respectable? How can Morales be legitimate after his Denver stay? How can Millwood be near the top in ERA?
Is it possible that those teams have a pitching coach who can coach pitchers?
What about the prospects who have come up short? Would they have come up short in another baseball town? Will we blame altitude on everything? Funny… Astacio, Ritz, early Cook, early Francis, early Ubaldo, early Chacin, Bohannon, Oliver etc. etc, etc, seemed to do ok here.
Move #1 is to get rid of Dac. Sorry, I really like him, but I like a lot of people who just can’t make the grade. Doesn’t mean I don’t like them, just means that they need a different job.
Move #2, clean out the coaching staff. Dauer might be the reason why so many contact plays have failed this year. Glenallen might have something to do with defense and fundamentals (plus, his Cubs history doesn’t speak to well for a winning culture). Too bad Gallegos isn’t still around. Why is Don Baylor the hitting coach in AZ and not here? He came back for a year… was it Hurdle? Was it Tracy? Was it Montfort? Was it DOD? Who is in charge of teaching Willin how to frame a pitch… or catch one for that matter?
Then get rid of Tracy and DOD. The clubhouse culture has been cleaned out, it hasn’t worked. Maybe it’s the management culture… do ya think?
There ARE MLB guys who can make it happen in this town. Might be time to find them. Or better yet, sell the team to Mark Cuban. He’ll find ‘em.
I keep screaming that no other pitching coach, whose staff has an above 6.00ERA,should survive another day at his job!!!And I too like “Dac”.Seems like a decent guy,but the results don’t lie.Hamnel was just maddening.I,like many here, kept waiting for him to “get it”.Guess he’s “got it”now!
The Orioles comitted MLB robbery acquiring two of the Rockies legit and experienced pitchers for Guthrie. Least we forget – let’s recap DanO’s 2011-2012 off season:
1. Guthrie – nuff said on that $8.0m mistake. Hated this deal from the get go as it makes (made) no sense.
2. Cuddyer – nice player howver making $3.5m per year more than he is actually worth (comp Willingham). For those who are math challenged that is over $10m that could have been spent on some real starting pitching.
3. Scutaro – another nice player but only worth $5m if he is the SS.
4. Outman, Moscoso, Chatwood, Schmidt, etc – not one average starter here in the bunch.
5. Hernandez – old and currently on DL.
6. Giambi – old is putting it nicely.
7. Paulino & Morales – as GM you have to find ways to keep pitchers with arms that throw 95+ mph.
8. Pomeranz, White and Gardner – all MILB level starting pitchers. And yes I know that was done a couple months before the official off season began.
9. J Tracy (last but certainly not least) – wish that I could get extended indefinitely while managing one of the worst performing companies in my industry – unfortunately real life doesn’t work like that.
Excluding Colvin (hot bench player right now) DanO has had an extremely bad year dating back to last July!
The DP quoted Friedrich today: “It’s about mind-set…Sometimes I overanalyze. I just need to stay aggressive. When I’m mixing all four of my pitches and trusting it, that’s when it call comes together.”
I’ve been saying for years that the Rox need a team shrink or at least someone who can remind them over and over that playing at altitude is a different game and you should expect different results. Coors Field gets in their heads, the pitchers think they need to do more and the hitters think they can do more. Then when they get on the road, the game reverts back to “normal.” Soon bad habits are ingrained. I’m no fan of Dac’s but I don’t think dumping him is going to help. The team needs a mentalist who can help them with their mind set. Which is exactly why JT was perfect for the job when he played cheerleader and is the worst manager possible the rest of the time.
