A bit verbose!
Nicely said, Jared. And Gary!
Gary, regarding your comment on the other thread about Ringolsby, etc.: The Cowboy was clearly frustrated with what’s going on. And Jim Tracy in his post-game comments just looked defeated to me. He kept saying “it’s a chore” figuring out how to handle his pitching staff. “It’s a chore.” Not very inspiring.
I think Jim Tracy is a really decent guy. I criticize his decisionmaking, but he seems like a genuine person, always polite and respectful to the media. Clint Hurdle was the opposite, coming off as a jerk most of the time. So I don’t say this to be mean, but here it is: Jim Tracy sounded like a loser yesterday. Defeated. Done. And I think Ringolsby is channeling that by suggesting what is now obvious to everyone: the time has come for a major change, top to bottom. That doesn’t mean “reassigning” the pitching coach. That means a complete overhaul. At this point you have to ask “What’s worth salvaging by keeping the management team in place?” Really, can it get any worse? This could be the worst rotation I’ve ever seen in my baseball following life. Really: Francis, Friedrich, Cabrera, Outman? One guy valiantly hanging in there (a 5th starter type now), and 3 guys who most likely will never make it as starters in MLB? That’s awful. And will bringing guys like Nicasio back change it? A bit, but the jury’s still out on Nicasio too, and if I had to bet on it I’d say that longterm he becomes a setup man rather than a starter. How could it get this bad? And why does O’Dowd insist on making it even worse by promoting Cabrera now? Even baseball people who like him admitted that he needed a lot more minor league seasoning. Just awful baseball and management that seems to have no clue about how to turn things around, and even guys like Ringolsby, who tries to be an optimist, can’t pretend otherwise anymore.
I should note that Ringolsby wrote an article on Fox Sports (“Coaching Rockies Pitchers Takes Toll”) that provides some insight on Apodaca. Describes him as just burned out. Again, I don’t blame Apodaca for being burned out, and I think he was overall a very effective coach. But how can any organization go forward when it’s leadership is defeated, burned out, describing their jobs as “chores?” I’m convinced the overhaul is coming very soon. No other way to put it: these guys are asking, literally with Apodaca, figuratively with Jim Tracy, to be relieved of their responsibilities.
But if DOD remains as GM, who would want to coach here? It raises the horrifying possibility that DOD would appoint himself as the team manager.
The take I get from Cowboy is that he’s finally taken off the purple sunglasses and sees that DOD has taken us all for chumps. Nothing worse than standing up for someone over the years only to discover he’s the fraud other’s have contended all along. Looks like the only person sill seeing purple is Dickie Monfort. With loyalists like our manager for life and Ringolsby speaking out maybe Dick will see the light and clean house.
Nice jare. I like the “move along”. There are some funny parts to that movie
I caught innings 5-7 on the radio (or technically MLB@bat on my phone) coming home from work last night. It was like listening to paint dry (except of course when the Nats put 2 more up in the 7th-the announcers seemed like ‘here we go again’). Seems top to bottom everyone has nothing left in the tank to give or even care.
I agree with you Ag on JT, I think he’s a good guy and for some reason I have it stuck in my head that he is knowledgeable about the game, but I’ve sure been wondering about that lately.
JD-great write up…sums it up perfectly. Its like the weather in Phoenix this week, you could just keep repeating that day after day and not be too far off.
Off Topic–just hope everyone on the board (and those we all care about) are safe from the fires. Was in Fort Collins last week and never saw anything like that while I was growing up there. Be safe all.
Is Cabrera going to stay with the Rockies, or was he just filling in for one game? I was at the game last night, and he is clearly not ready to be a Rockie. He needs more time in the minors.
It sounds like Pomeranz will be up before too long. So, maybe the rotation will be Francis, Friedrich, Outman, and Pomeranz, with Nicacio coming, and later Chacin. Still not great, but maybe a step in the right direction. Hopefully, DLR can pitch in 2013.
We need to trade the veterans and give the younger players the opportunity to play. Scutaro, Giambi, Hernandez, Cuddyer, and Guthrie all should go.
With all of the players getting DFA’d, isn’t there a starting pitcher there somewhere who might be an upgrade for us?
While listening to parts of last night’s game on radio, I heard something interesting coming from the talking heads at KOA. During the time Guthrie was pitching and struggling, Corrigan mentioned that Guthrie was at about 45/50 pitches. But than he said something that totally blew me away. He said that Guthrie appeared to be running out of gas. Really, at about 50 pitches? Wasn’t this guy a starter just a few days ago programmed and conditioned to go at least 100 pitches. I absolutely hate it when these talking heads just continue to make excuses for this sorry a** team.
