Just notice Walkman sent down … all the way to Tulsa. Depriving us of a chance to use the new nickname. This season is no fun at all.
Do you still prefer ol dexter over Colvin mr. stat guy?
Uh oh, I can’t wait for Ag’s response to this. These are fighting words. I’ve learned my lesson, no more crossing swords with ol’ Agbayani.
Tough to score runs when your leadoff hitter goes 0-for-5 with four K’s. And saw just 17 pitches; apparently he didn’t feel it was helpful to try and work the count.
On the road this year, Fowler’s batting .193 with an alarming 36% strikeout rate…nearly twice as many strikeouts (34) as hits (18).
Why is Giambi still on this team? He’s obviously a luxury they can’t afford.
Just to note: the Best GM in Baseball has put together a team with the Worst in Baseball record. On par to lose 100.
Just too funny that the MFL (Manager for Life) Tracy and the BIB (Best in baseball) DanO continue on with the Rockies. Both would have been fired years ago by ANY other team in the MLB. Orioles once again my favorite team, and I do not live anywhere near Camden Yard.
One last note after the 2011 and 2012 seasons, the Colorado Rockies have actually more than earned the #1 overall draft pick in 2013.
Too bad they won’t know what to do with it.
I have to disagree with you OrangeRocks. It’s not funny at all. If this were a little league team, the parents would band together to oust the coach.
I had to give up bitching about the current status of MFL Tracy and BIB DanO. In deed truth be told I had to have therapy seasons last year to somehow survive the MFL (Manager for Life) announcement – so as such the only logical thing to do now is to “laugh” at the Rockies and their owners.
I agree, it seems that trading Giambi is obviously a move that should be made. Wouldn’t a contending team give us a pitching prospect, an arm of the future?
BTW the basement dwelling fire sale should include ALL of the following:
1. Guthrie (nice guy but does not fit Coors or Rockies going forward)
2. Scutaro (a favorite of mine, but he should bring back some pitching)
3. Cuddyer (too much money although I like the RH power bat)
4. Hernandez (solid veteran but the Rockies don’t need him now)
5. Giambi (should have been gone three years ago-just not a fan at all)
6. EY2 (it is time to move on to a player that more accurately fits the roster)
7. Moscoso (never trade pitching but this guy has earned the exception)
and should NOT include any of the following:
1. Any other Rockies pitcher (Guthrie and Moscoso are excepted)
2. Fowler (somebody has to cover the vast CF of Coors)
3. Colvin (earned some playing time although not sure he can sustain it?)
4. Nelson (he has earned the right to play second base unless Rutledge can do it better)
Also BTW did anyone else notice that the Rockies had (although very briefly) an all lefty starting rotation just as I had contemplated back in the off season? Although to be fair I had predicted DLR and Cabrera in the mix while the most recent version had Francis and Friedrich.
I keep reading how the home team is on track to lose 100 games and I always find this sort of math to be problematic. Just because they’ve lost 50 at the halfway mark doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll double that.
Using this logic, I have a much worse scenario.
Since they won 11 in April, 10 in May and 9 in June, this math tells me they will win 8 this month, 7 in Aug, 6 in Sep for a nice total of 51 wins with 3 games left in Oct. Kinda makes 100 losses look better.
Of course, it’s rare that any team duplicates their mid-season W/Ls. So whaddya think? Will this team be better or worse in the second half? Really.
How could it possibly get worse? Wait. Don’t answer that!
exactly Saberchip..always rediculous when someone comes out and hits 4 HR’s first 2 weeks and all the hoopla around him projected to hit 112 for the year. Almost boarders on stupidity to make statements like that. I believe Kemp was going to to sew up the MVP in April…that ship sailed for obvious reasons…just like predicting Rox will lose at least 100. None of us want that regardless..you don’t have to be the low victory team and still need changes..we do!
Most of you have read my posts (well maybe) about how we need to stand behind our team to which Jaredean certainly voices it here and we share that opinion. Is it upseting?? Hell yes but not to the point of giving up/boycotting or bandwagoning. I for one expect the front office to have a major overhaul down to the coaching staff. We talk about DOD having a very poor draft record. I know he doesn’t scout the players or provide information as to who to draft. That is a scouting department issue and if their record has been truly this bad, then start the cleaning there. Yes, DOD agrees with them and is responsible so sayonara.
OrangeRocks posting has some legitimate names for a fire sale. However I would like to hear some opinions of why Cuddyer’s name keeps coming up..other than a high salary (and you can’t blame him for that) I feel he has performed very good in his role. He wasn’t brought in to hit 35 HR. Brings lots of energy and productivity every time he plays. Let’s get rid of role players who cannot contribute day to day if called upon. Giambino is at the end and thanks for some really good memories and leadership! Pinchhitting EY2 at any time is a waste. As a pinch runner he has done very well but seriously? Scutero will be a free agent after this year so if we can get something now, do it.
We all know changes are coming…let’s hope more wins are on that list!
Go Rox
If the Rockies determine that Colvin and Fowler are starters, then that makes Cuddyer a $11.5m per year 4th outfielder. Further if the Monforts were Steinbenner, you could simply say that the money to Cuddyer was no big deal.
However you can only play three outfielders at one time and in case you might have missed it – the Rockies still need pitching. $10.0m per year can buy you a fairly serious starting pitcher in the MLB market.
thanks Orange…I think what you missed is the Rox weren’t shopping for pitching at the time. I agree that they could have used it but it wasn’t on their list. All I am saying is he has performed well given what has happened. They need to decide if Colvin or Cuddyer is going to be getting a bunch of starts at first.
Go Rox
This is almost like Deja Vu. Unfortunately for me, I seem to understand this version of “new math”. Being a long time Rays supporter including the family having seasons tickets, I’ve been down this road. More than once. In general, I agree they are on track to lose 100. Realisticly, probably 90-95. Nothing I’ve seen makes me optimistic for a better second half.
Then there is the subject of players. Who stays? Who goes? How come player “x” does well eslewhere but not with the Rockies or in Coors? Another similarity as Rays fan includes a much beloved Rockie. I believe he is refered to as “cuz”. Most Rockies fans love him. Most Rays fans believed he didn’t hit the road soon enough.
I will be totally shocked if something doesn’t give during the break and before the deadline. With the exception of Tulo and Cargo, I could see just about anything happening with every other player. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see one of Fowler/Colvin moved. And this crap about Guthrie “earned the right” stuff by the broadcast crew. LOL! Guthrie “earned the right” to build up trade value and get exposure. Nothing more, nothing less.
I hope they can turn it around for the second half but I not so optimistic.
Fowler vs. Colvin: why not have ‘em both? In response to Egossage (glad to see you back and in fine form too) –
I do still prefer Fowler to Colvin. Here’s why:
– they’ve been almost equally productive on overall “rate” stats (per Plate Appearance) this year, although Dex has done it over more playing time
– overall, on the very short list of Good Things that Happened to the Rockies in 2012, we have this: overall productivity for outfielders: CarGo about 7th overall in all of MLB, Dex about 17th, Colvin about 21st (minimum 180 PAs). That’s really good. A Top 10 outfielder and 2 Top 25s. Remember, there’s about 100 outfielders who’ve played that much. And those numbers are offense only. All 3 are really centerfielders, and good ones at that. So outfield play is not the problem.
So my main point is this — we get it, you don’t like Dex. But I can think of, oh, 30 other Rockies players and managers who’ve been more of the problem than Dex. We have a really good outfield. Colvin hasn’t demonstrated his ability to hit like this over more than half a season. Maybe he’s turning the corner. Play him every day. What’s to lose?
On Orange’s point: Cuddyer is, indeed, an $11.5 million 4th outfielder. As we stats geeks expected, he is just a bit below average as a rightfielder. I don’t make the spending decisions; the Best GM in All of Baseball does that, and he made a boneheaded move by signing Cuddyer at that amount of money, and over 3 years. Similarly, I don’t make the playing time decisions. We’ve got The Manager for Life to do that. And Cuddyer could be a somewhat below average MLB first baseman, which would be better than the considerably below average 38 year old Living Rockie Legend who can’t be moved until he tells us he’s ready. (Point of interest: the unsentimental Red Sox dumped Youkilis because they think he’s done as an effective starter. He’s 5 years younger than Helton and he’s hitting at exactly the same level as Helton.)
So that’s the short answer, and it’s long enough already. The longer answer would also look at what these guys are getting paid. CarGo, Dex, and Colvin are all cost-controlled and they ought to be the core we rebuild around. CarGo is locked up for several years, Dex has (I think) 3 more years before free agency (thanks to getting sent down to AAA the last couple years), and Colvin isn’t even arb-eligible for a couple years. If someone offers us a great deal for Dex by all means take it. I like him, but as I said, excess sentimentality is for losers. I do give O’Dowd credit for getting Colvin (and LeMahieu, who I’d rather see than Johnny Sparkplug on this roster) since it’s looking like Ian Stewart is, indeed, toast. But Colvin does have an unsustainable BABIP (.359; just as a point of reference, Jeter — one of the best at getting hits on balls in play — has a lifetime .354 BABIP), so he’ll probably come back down some. But I like what I see, and I can’t see any reason to play old guys now instead of young guys.
Just a fact of life that Ego will blame Dex for everything that goes bad and Pooter will say that EY Jr. is the solution …
You tell ‘em Ag!
Ego, I told you not to cross swords with Ag. When will we all learn that?
Yeah, I don’t think I’m gonna convince him either.
Is Tulo off the table in any trade discussions now? Just throwing it out there
No offense but the Rockies will NOT trade Tulo even if his contract was very friendly, he was completely healthy, and the Rockies had three stud shortstops knocking down the door to the MLB. This is a trade (Tulo ) that would never happen and I almost never say never to anything.
I agree. That’s more of that sentimental attachment stuff. Not that I want to trade Tulo or anything, but if somebody gave us a fantastic offer it’d be worth looking at. But I doubt they’d seriously look.
Tulo’s contract is the issue. If he gets healthy and stays reasonably healthy and doesn’t decline faster than expected, it’s fine. But it goes up to 20 million a year in 2015 and stays there through 2019. Right now he probably has no significant trade value — the new club would just be taking on his contract. And we’d be selling low since he hasn’t established his health. I think that’s why it’s off the table for now.
Whatever… We (you) all bitch all winter about how the Rox won’t spend any money, then when they do we all bitch because it was’t for Stephen Strasborg or some other equally impossible dream. Cuddyer’s simply not sexy enough for us I guess. Maybe it’s his wife. Maybe she’s ugly or had a bad boob job or something. I better Google her + check…
Monfort could go out and buy the NL All Star team. Dan O’Down, Jim Tracy and the coaching staff would still find a way to lose 90 games. I said it last year and I’ll repeat it again this year; How does anyone know what kind of talent is on this team with such dysfunctional leadership?
Ike. I agree with you. Somebody has the burn the dirty pictures of the Monferts that DoD is using to blackmail them. Then they can get rid of the whole management staff and start anew.
As for Cuddeyer. Yes, he’s overpaid but he is still a better option at 1st then either Giambi or Helton. So play him there, trade Giambi for whatever you can get for him which I don’t think we’ll be much and hope that Helton either gets better physically and at the plate (which might not happen) or have enough pride to know he’s through.
Here’s the problem with “spending” the Monforts’ money. They’re not spending their money. It our dollars their spending and if they double the payroll, we should expect tickets, concessions, parking, etc to double.
Cleaning house won’t get us back in the hunt immediately. We’ll have to wait for the next philosophy to run its course.
I can wait but it’s extremely difficult to do while the current regime keeps shooting holes in the lifeboat. I can’t keep bailing. My bucket’s got a hole in it, too.
