There were multiple reasons why the Rockies lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates today, dropping another series in a long long season, but the most glaring was the continued hate-hate relationship Jeremy Guthrie has with Coors.

Guthrie Must Go. Period.

Today’s Line: 2.2 IP, 6 R, 2 HR

Coors Field ERA: 9.51

HR’s Given Up:21 (15 at Coors)…most in the NL

Salary This Season: $8.2 MM

I went out there to throw strikes and be aggressive. I felt great but the results just weren’t there.

Jeremy Guthrie

I don’t think his breaking ball really does what he wants it to do here…But whether it’s this ballpark or any other ballpark, you can’t get behind in the count and you can’t leave breaking balls up. I really don’t want to sit here and create a crutch that you can’t pitch in this park. You can, and we have seen it here of late with Jeff Francis.

Jim Tracy

If any team acquires jeremy guthrie, one tip: dont use at coors.

Jon Heyman

It’s a joke if Guthrie is still a Rockie by tomorrow.

Trevor Irvine

Napoleon had a better record at Waterloo than Jeremy Guthrie has at Coors Field.  My math might be off a bit, but Jeremy Guthrie gives up 13.6 Home Runs per start

There is little doubt that at some point Guthrie will go. That said, How many times in this series were the bases left loaded? How many risp and nada?

I really thought Guthrie would be a good addition and work out well. I was really wrong.

OK, this is unethical as hell, but this is my call on what to do with Guthrie.

Develop a hangnail and blister, put him on 15 day DL.

During rehab start, lose another nail. 15 day DL. Find a complication to keep him on the DL until about Sept. 10. Give him 2 starts to establish trade value (or not). Then get rid of him. He has NO trade value right now, and the Rox would have to eat a bunch of $.

We’d best accept the fact that for 300/400 AB a year, Colvin is a stud. Beyond that, he’s not. You can play him 2 out of 4, occasionally 3/4, but he doesn’t look like an everyday guy now. At all. We now have 2 recent occurrences to show that when he plays too much, he sucks. When he doesn’t, he’s great. Perfect scenario for EY to remain with the team.

Next year, Rutledge is at 2B. Cuddy at 1B to start the year… 1B is the next target on the farm. Either Pacheco turns into the next Vinny, or Nolan is a starter, Jordan is the super-util. I’ll let one of youze guys pick the pitching staff. Keep in mind though (haha) that my new manager Ryne Sandberg is in charge and Rick Hahn is the GM. And Mark Cuban is the owner (sorry, couldn’t resist! lol).

I agree with your assessment of Colvin. Reminds me of Seth Smith. Couldn’t this team package all these “so,so” players and get 1 good one?

I really don’t understand why Scutaro is taking a spot on the roster right now? Is he in the Rockies future plans? Plenty of people that could audition for that role for 2013.

I no longer watch the games, havn’t been watching for a while actually. But in the clips I have noticed a some what festive atmosphere at Coors Field. Pretty suprising to me being that this is the least enthuised I have ever been about the Colorado Rockies. I have always remained interested when they were crappy in the past. Something about this group that has me anxiously awaiting football.

Why put Guthrie on the DL? Put him back in the BP. He seemed to do ok in that roll. I would do whatever it takes to get him positive exposure. Sitting him on a bench just compounds an already bad value situation.

One other thing. “The next Vinny”? I’m guessing you mean when Vinny was a Rockie because he was much like Guthrie. Guthrie was decent as an Oriole and is struggling here. Vinny may have been good as a Rockie but not so much elsewhere.

Well, we know Pacheco will never hit 30 HRs in a season unless he hits the roids. That’s not his game. I don’t see a reason why he can’t continue to be a solid contributer though whether that’s as a starter or off the bench, I don’t know.

He can possibly be a better version of Jamie Carroll.

Prog I do not understand the your comparison of Carroll and Pacheco and their respective roles on the Rockies roster?

      - Carroll aging 2B/SS that continues to rely on defense to earn MLB playing time.
      - Pacheco rookie 3B/C that relies primarily of the hitting tool to get MLB playing time.

Very different players at least in my assessment. Yes both lack power, however there is at least a little hope that Pacheco could develop some power with more experience.

Here’s an observation about the crowds and the festive nature.

Ever go to a Cubs series? Those must be the people that are goin’ to Coors Field now. Cubs fans have had the same Rox experience only stretched out like a rubber band over the past 100+ years.

Problem with Arenado is his numbers just don’t look that good. He’s probably ticketed for CS next year.

Who is looking good is Kyle Parker. He’s eatin’ it up in Modesto.

Doesn’t anybody else think that success in Tulsa should mean the next stop in the Springs where those kids can get acclaimated to altitude? Real talent can succeed at the major league level by skipping AAA but the trouble with this regime is there continued jumping into the bigs where hot Drillers cool off and most often regress.

Historically position players (unless off the charts elite like Tulo) do go to AAA Sky Sox, while the elite pitchers usually skip the inflated ERA that the Springs often inflicts on their ego. The humidor (this year) in the Springs may have changed that Rockies thought process on this however.

Irregardless, based on his 2012 performance I agree that Arenado belongs in the Springs to start 2013.

I definately see your point Rich. I guess my point was that both are sort of 1 and 1/2 dimensional players.

If you talk about fielding, running, power, and average I think to be a solid starter you should have 2 of those things. Both Carroll and Pacheco fall 1/2 a point short for me.

Pacheco can be an above average contact hitter with average defense and Carroll was an above average defender with average contact ability.

If Pacheco’s defense continue to improve or he developes some power that would be awesome.

I just don’t see him developing into Vinny Castilla by ANY stretch of the imagination.

Back on topic – me thinks that DanO has once again bluffed his way to trading Guthrie at even more dollars lost with less prospect value returned than he could have received just a couple weeks ago! But then again I must have forgotten that DanO is the best GM in the MLB – oh that’s right he also has the worst record in the MLB too – there must be something wrong with this scenario right?

I don’t think I’m guessing in saying that most of regular contributors and followers of RWO would like to see DoD saddle up the next horse and get out of town. My question is where does Monfort turn to?

Monfort has already said that DoD is the best GM in baseball he knows. And then he admitted he doesn’t know them all. Does he know anybody who knows baseball? If not who is going to advise him? Jim Traccy? Heaven forbid.

    • Cisco Kid says:

What the Monforts need to do is hire a team president (which they haven’t had one since McGregor passed away). That will allow the Monforts to step aside and count their money and not make any baseball decisions. The new president can than come in and clean house and the Monforts can stay clean of the bloodshed that would occur. This new president can than hire his own GM, field manager, scouting and player development directors.

I realize that’s quite a bit to wish for, but one can only hope.

To answer your question Bill, where do the Monforts turn to- they can hire an existing GM who has a good track record and wants to move up the career ladder, similar to what Theo Epstein did when he moved to Chicago from Boston. Here’s a name to consider- Sabean of the Giants. He’s one of the longest tenured GMs in BB and you would weaken a division rival. Also, how about Cashen of the Yanks. He may be wanting to get out of the fish bowl of NY. The downside is perhaps Dick Monfort has never heard of these guys or what they’ve accomplished with their teams.

The bottom line is any change would be better than what we currently have.

Great trade for making the most of a shitty situation. Not going to cheer Dan O’Dowd over it, but Sanchez is a reclamation project that if goes ok could be a good one. Not sure I have any faith in coaching staff to do it.

Anyway, that fact they got anything out of Guthrie even if they eat the whole salary is a gain.
