The Colorado Rockies wind-up their seven-game homestand Sunday afternoon with a 1:10 pm MDT start against the Miami Marlins at Coors Field in downtown Denver. The Rockies will send left-hander Drew Pomeranz (1-7, 5.04) out against Miami’s Josh Johnson (7-9, 3.73) as Colorado looks to finish 5-2 during the home skein and split the four-game series with the Marlins.
Pomeranz will take the hill on seven day’s rest. The Rockies are monitoring his progress closely. The 23 year-old spent May and June with AAA Colorado Springs reforming his delivery and returned to Denver on July 1 for the first of two scoreless 6 inning outings, but with the exception of a four-inning shut-out start against Los Angeles on August 6, he’s bumbled since. He’s battled a “dead arm” and chest pain since late July, and the Rockies plan to be careful with him down the stretch of a lost Colorado season.
Johnson, a righty who went head-to-head with former Rockie Ubaldo Jimenez in a 2010 first half display of pitching wizardry, has only allowed 4 earned runs in his past 5 starts, and took the loss for Miami on Tuesday when Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies homered off him on the second pitch of a game that Philadelphia won 1-0.
It’ll be a pleasant afternoon in Lodo with temperatures ranging from 77 to 81° F under partly cloudy skies. Relative humidity will be around 22% with winds out of the north-northeast at 7 MPH. Rockies TV is as usual on ROOT Sports with the radio broadcast on KOA 850 am.
The Rockies returned Michael Cuddyer to the 15 -day Disabled List and recalled outfielder Andrew Brown from the Sky Sox. Colorado MFL Jim Tracy has Ramon Hernandez at clean-up, catching, Charlie Blackmon making his first MLB start of 2012 in right-field, and Jonny Herrera at second-base. Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen has Emilio Bonifacio and Donnie Murphy coming-off the DL. Both are starting, Bonifacio leading-off in center-field and Murphy hitting sixth at third. Justin Ruggiano will play left-field for Miami and John Buck is back behind the plate.
