Chacin Back Against Mets

Jhoulys Chacin (0-3, 7.30) returns to the mound tonight for the Colorado Rockies in their 5:10 pm match-up with the New York Mets at Citi Field near Flushing Meadow in the Borough of Queens.  The right-hander, who last started May 1 when he gave-up 7 earned runs on 11 hits with 4 walks in 4 2/3 innings against the Dodgers, will be reinstated from the disabled list this evening to face New York’s Chris Young (3-6, 4.50), also a righty and coming back from an injury that required anterior capsule surgery on his throwing shoulder.  The 6′-10″ Young held the Reds scoreless on 8 hits with 4 walks and 4 strike-outs in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-0 Mets’ loss last Tuesday.

On June 21, 2011 Chacin was 8-4 with a 2.71 ERA, but had just walked 6 in 6 2/3 innings of an inter-league game against the Indians.  He bumbled through the remainder of 2011, then got called-out by Colorado BIB General Manager Dan O’Dowd for a lacking work ethic during the off-season.  All of this foreshadowed five sparkling 2012 starts during which he gave-up 20 runs on 31 hits, with 15 walks in
24 2/3 innings of work.  On the verge of a demotion to Colorado Springs Chacin happened to mention his shoulder had been kinda sore, and after trips to several medical experts it was determined there was a nerve impingement in the pectoral muscle that now appears to be cleared-up.  It is unknown whether the BIB ever thought to ask the 24 year-old if his arm had been feeling okay.

As of posting there is no fresh news of the roster moves the Rockies will make to accommodate Chacin. Eric Young Jr is not in the lineup posted by Colorado MFL Jim Tracy.  The scrappy cast-of-characters that appeared on Monday are back, with Ramon Hernandez catching and batting clean-up.  Andrew Brown moves down to sixth in the order.  Terry Collins has shuffled the New York group around. Outfielders Jordany Valdespin in left and Andres Torres in center are hitting sixth and seventh respectively.

The weather at game time in the big city will be mostly cloudy with a temperature of 77° F, 50% relative humidity and winds out of the south-southwest at 5 MPH.  Rockies’ TV features Drew and George on ROOT with Jack and Jerry on radio KOA 850 am.

Ey Jr on injury: “big believer things happen for reason. No reason to hold a pity party. I will get better and get out there”

You know, if he injured it on the swing he held up on (the last time he played) then he can REALLY play poker because you couldn’t tell he was hurt…

All of these injuries and roster moves only give MFL Tracy and BIB DOD a mulligan as far as Dickie M. sees it. If they lose, it’s because they weren’t playing with a full deck. If they win as they have been lately- see, BIB DOD has built great depth in the organization and MFL Tracy can make chicken salad out of chicken s***t. It’s a no lose proposition for both. I’m sure a contract extension for both is in the works in the off-season.

Cisco, we’ve talked about this before, and you do have a point. But I’m gonna go with my other theory for now: thank goodness this ragtag bunch is playing competitive baseball, and thank goodness Chacin looks like he can come all the way back. That means the Monforts are less likely to cut payroll and more likely to try to compete next year.

And yeah, Jeem, this makes O’Dowd look more like an idiot. Chacin was hurt, not lazy. Ubaldo is hurt or has lost what he had, not because he’s lazy. Even Ian Stewart apparently has had a wrist problem for a couple years. Either that or he’s just a masochist who enjoys surgery. Funny how Danny’s faves never get called out for being slackers even when they miss lots of time – think Tulo, who (you guessed it) sucked in the field this year because he was hurt and needed surgery.

Ian Stewart and Chacin were DOD favorites ever since 2007 offseason when O’Dowd trusted them enough not to move them in a play to actually improve a WS contending team. He stuck with then for 4 years. Its only natural to get pissed at your faves when then continually let you down. O’Dowd’s failing isn’t turning on them…it’s making it public.

This has been the strangest year, one player after another, usually just after they get it going, goes down with an injurt. When Tulo went down in May you had a feeling that things were over as far as any potential of a chase after the 2nd WC. But then you lose you top FA signee. You lose the veteran catcher you were counting on to help groom your young catcher and keep the pitching staff from imploding. And you potential HOF at 1B has a hip that makes my grandmother’s look like Usain Bolt’s. And how about your starting 5 in the rotation going down one by one (and the one you were couting on coming back from TJ never getting healthy). While this team has real issues (mostly around the rotation), the fact is that even moderate health could have made this team at least 10 games better. For 2013 to be a playoff run (and I really do believer that with that 2nd WC, they could compete next year), they need Tulo and CarGo to play 158 at least, and they need to keep the guys who get hot (like EYJr and Rutledge) healthy until at least tehy hit their fall-back spot.

I hope we can get EYJr back in September because if he can continue to do what he has since the AS breaj this it frees the team to move some other pieces (clealry his value is higher with the Rox than it would be with any other team). Get well EYJr, and stay positive.

MFL Jim Tracy will never play anyone for 158,even if the player was hitting .400 with 50 HR’s!

The MLF Sunday lineups would eliminate any possiblity of a 158 game season.
