2K15 HOT STOVE: NON-ROX

Thought I’d start a parking lot for all things Hot Stove non-Rockies related.

Item #1 – Snakes close to hiring Dave Stewart as GM. Tony LaRussa guy (boy – that’s an understatement). Not sure what to make of this one. No real previous experience.

Item #2 – Multiple rumors from all sorts of “sources” that the Braves are interested in DoD in some sort of capacity. Bless their souls!

Atlanta — 5 (count ’em, 5!) pitchers DL’d right from the start of the season, including Kris Medlen (one of their best), his projected replacement, Mike Minor, and the “starting pitching depth” guy Brandon Beachy. GM signs Ervin Santana, who — surprisingly — turns in a really good 190 innings. Braves struggle but stay in the hunt until September. And yet the GM gets fired. Now that Dan O’Dowd is rumored to be “sought after,” watch the Monforts re-up him… Read more »

Total head-scratcher why Dan is garnering any interest. Whaaaat? He must have a magnetic personal presence or something, because track record obviously does not matter to his current (nor possible future) employers.

I guess the comments I made on a different thread should have been made here. Maybe, and it’s only a rumor, the reason why Hart would want DoD is that DoD is a good “assistant” but not a good leader. Happens to lots of people in lots of fields.

Hire Ron Gardenhire in any capacity as long as it is not a “yes man” job.

Pretty sure that is the only opening right now…

A note on this franchise… About 10 days ago I was a guest of the team for a specific function. On the field, in a suite, treated very well. The Colorado Rockies guest experience is unparalleled in sports, entertainment or anything else. They are Major League in every way, except on the diamond. I like Dick Montfort. Yeah, I do. I really like Dan O’Dowd. Smart guy, smart baseball guy (yeah, I said that). Their customer service is off the… Read more »

Quick note on why it often makes sense to trade a veteran player — Royals got Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain in the Zach Greinke trade to the Brewers in 2010. Those guys are both great defensively, and overall were worth about 8.5 wins above replacement combined this year, which is pretty fantastic. Think about that the next time someone says we just can’t trade [fill in the blank: Tulo, Cargo, De La Rosa, etc.]

Looks like DOD is a candidate for the Brewers job. He misses Colorado Springs already.

Brewers?? I wasn’t aware the Brewers had an opening. I believe you mean the Braves.

I saw a tweet from one of the Brewers beat writers this AM saying the Brew Crew was considering DOD for a front office position (not Doug Melvin’s position). Sorry I wasn’t clear. AND……it was from Twitter, so you never know.

Although, I have to say that I follow a couple of beat writers from each team on Twitter – and more often than not it’s a great, early source of information.

Dodgers grab Friedman — I bet O’Dowd and Geivett were #2 and #3 on their wish list!

This a flat out scary move. Friedman isn’t good, he’s great. Maybe having all that money to work with confuse him.

Ag – I wanted to comment more on Friedman this AM, but I was hustling through the Airport (to Atlanta – and Dan O’Dowd isn’t on my flight). Friedman is so stinkin’ good it’s hard to imagine what he’ll be able to do with deep pockets. I heard/read he’ll try to clear up the Dodgers OF logjam immediately, and someone even suggested a trade to TB for Joe Maddon (who I also love – but I find this hard to… Read more »

FWIW – several sources reporting Mets have interest in Cuddyer. This makes a lot of sense from their standpoint, and it may from his as well. They’ll likely come closest to meeting his salary demands (“demand” is a strong word in Cuddyer’s case – but you know what I mean) and apparently he a David Wright are longtime buddies. The Mets are also bringing the OF fences in (again) at CitiField.

Joe Maddon opts out of contract with Rays – leaving him available to any team. Don Mattingly (and the rest of the NL West competition) should be sweating bullets at the moment.

Maddon is an alternative dude. The Bridman should at least pickup the phone and give him a courtesy call.

It truly sucks if you are a Rays fan. 1st Friedman and now Joe. Joe is hugely admired and a fan favorite. MLB complained about low Ray’s attendance last season? Next season ought to be something. Even my family is already yammering about not renewing their tickets. I agree with sdcarp. If I were Mattingly I might be a bit concerned. As far as coming here? ahhh … or is it hahaha There is an ever so slight chance he… Read more »

The one thing that gave me hope that we could compete with the Dodgers and their payroll about 2.75 times higher than ours: they had a dumb GM! And a not very good field manager either. I guess those days are over. And now I’m watching Jeremy Guthrie about to win a World Series game. Jeremy Guthrie. Yeah.

Didn’t take long for all the internet rumors to get fired up. Sorry but I’m not on board with the Cubs or even the Cardinals. I called my sister but she says she has no clue. She did say if she was a betting woman she wouldn’t discount the Angels.

I’ll preface this by saying I may end up being completely wrong – but keep in mind Maddon is a alternative sole. I don’t know that I see him automatically gravitating to the most money. That being said – I can see the challenge of winning a championship with the Cubs being intriguing to him. I don’t see him in LA or New York.

The Marlins and outfielder Giancarlo Stanton are in agreement on a 13-year, $325MM contract extension that will set the benchmark as the new largest contract in the history of professional sports.

Holy Shite – Braves in rebuild mode. Jason Heyward to Cards for Shelby Miller.

sdcarp

sdcarp

Wow – they’re sending Jordan Walden along with Heyward.

A couple of my hardcore Braves fans friends told me a complete fire sale / rebuild was possible with the target being ready for the 2017 move into the new Cobb County Suburbia Stadium. I guess they may be correct!

Some talk that Cincy could go the route of fire sale also.

I’ve heard the Cincy rumors also. Good luck to the Rays and sabermetrics. When the dust settles I sure hope they have 1500 people in the stands each night.

In my mind (and I realize I view things differently than some here) – this escalation “could” help the Rox if played correctly. Tulo and Cargo’s contracts aren’t looking so big at the moment and they are controllable for a while (unlike Heyward). Shelby Miller for Heyward (I realize there are two others involved – but let’s focus on these) sets a bit of a benchmark. Heyward is cheap (in the sick baseball sense) but only controllable next year. Tulo… Read more »

I believe it was Tom Verducci on MLB Network that says that Tulo to the Mets will happen before spring training pointing out Tulo’s stats at Citi Field are awesome.

Mike Raysfan

If Tulo goes it would have to be a very specific trade. There are other good free agent shortstops out there

sdcarp

sdcarp

?????? Here are the FA SS:

Mike Aviles *
Asdrubal Cabrera
Stephen Drew
Alex Gonzalez
Jed Lowrie
John McDonald
Hiroyuki Nakajima *
Hanley Ramirez
Jimmy Rollins *

Ugly, ugly list. Hanley really can’t play the position defensively. Drew can – but he can’t hit. Rollins is OLD. Ugly, ugly list.

Mike Raysfan

I’m sure there are a few teams that view both Ramirez and Lowrie as good free agent shortstops.

sdcarp

Thing about Hanley is that he’ll cost as much going forward as Tulo. Mike – I agree that Hanley stacks up superbly offensively against other ML SSs – only Tulo is better. Ironically they both have the same problem staying on the field. But Hanley is awful defensively.

And where is Toronto getting their money? How could they possibly afford giving Jon Lester a 6yr $150 million deal? Man once the stuff starts happening the rumors are all over the place.

sdcarp

I’ll preface this by saying I have a deep-seated hatred of the Braves – so take anything I say about them with a grain of salt. They’re being really weird. Trade Heyward (I get that) – get a controllable Shelby Miller in return. Justin Upton almost certainly to be traded. They’ll pay someone to take BJ Upton. Even (Evan) Gattis may be traded. So………..we’ve got a fire sale, right? Well…..they’re talking to Jon Lester today. Seems to me they may… Read more »

I just saw Arizona Fall League summaries from two respected writers, Bernie Pleskoff and Jim Callis. Callis did his Top 25 prospects in the league (not based on league performance; just the 25 best sent down there overall). No Rockies on that list. Pleskoff did a rundown of all the impressive performers he saw. I counted the names of players he mentioned. There’s 21. NO ROCKIES MENTIONED. We knew we sent our weakest crop of prospects down there in many,… Read more »

Mike – you’re correct about Twitter and the Red Sox. I woke up to Ken Rosenthal tweets that KFP to Boston was done – hence my post here. Now I get back online and get the old “not so fast” routine. I am seeing Hanley to Boston as being “done” as well – most likely as an outfielder (leftfield to be specific). So lets say this pans out and Boston gets Hanley and KFP. All of a sudden – at… Read more »

Well it looks like the Red Sox and KFP have come to some agreement on a 5yr $100m deal. wow. It is now being alleged that Cespedese and Napoli are odd men out. Cespedese odd man out? Already? I guess that sort of signals where Ramirez will be playing.

So much for the Red Sox spew on no longer going the $$$$$ route. That didn’t last long. It is being alleged $95m of Panda’s $98m is guaranteed and all $88m of Ramirez is guaranteed.

Bob K., I love these updates. To paraphrase Bill James: All a player needs is one decent year in the last 5 for some GM out there to be willing to give him another chance. For Ian Stewart, that “decent year” (still below average for a third baseman, but decent) was in 2010 — just under the wire on the 5 year rule. So I guess this is really his last chance, and the fact that its a minor league… Read more »
