Guess Who’s Back…Back Again…

Michael Cuddyer is back in the familiar-five spot in today’s lineup for the final game, and rubber match, against the Nationals.  Last nights game was pretty much horrible, with the Rockies only producing three hits (two of those from Herrera) and losing 5-1.  Today Jeff Francis will take the bump and Tuesdays hero, Tyler Colvin, will take a seat.

ROCKIES LINEUP

2. Jordan Pacheco (R) 1B
3. Carlos Gonzalez (L) LF
4. Troy Tulowitzki (R) SS
5. Michael Cuddyer (R) RF
6. Wilin Rosario (R) C
7. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
8. DJ LeMahieu (R) 2B
9. Jeff Francis (L) P

Dickerson or Blackmon if CarGo goes DL?

It would likely be Blackmon since Dickerson is not on the 40 man roster.

YES.

Reminds me of “Final Destination”. The baseball gods allowed them to survive the near catasrophe yesterday only to both go down today.

Back to back balks to score the tying run? Wilton Lopez is a disaster this year.

“Disaster”? That’s a bit over the top don’t you think Thistle? The guy has an ERA of 3.79, what exactly are you looking for?

Not watching the game, but it sounds like “Balking Bob” was asserting his authority in calling those balks. Lopez gives up a bloop single, stolen base, and two questionable balks. I hardly call that a disaster.

You’re right, but it seems like he has given up an awful lot of leads in close games this year.

Worst game of the season by far. Laundry list of what went wrong today.

Tulo hurt apparently as well.

Should we be getting concerned about Belisle?

OK, so Oswalt comes up next week and goes in the rotation. Who does he replace in the rotation? My suggestion is move Nicasio to the BP, it alleviates two problems-it strengthens both the rotation and the BP.

Can’t believe this game.

Very strange game indeed. First Herrera replaces Cargo in LF, now Pacheco comes in to LF and Yorvit in at 1st Base.

Also, why is WW putting Brothers in when the team is behind? That will limit how much he can use him during the weekend.

Probably because the rest of the pen is falling apart.

So let’s blow up Brothers before the All-Star break

He hasn’t pitched in awhile. He pitched one quick inning. Don’t see a problem with that. I think Beslile has had at least two bad outings in a row. However in the past he’s done that and has bounced back. Perhaps we can wait a few days to be worried. I still am not sold on Lopez. I think all his good outings have been non-stress innings. Either way ahead or way behind. In close games he’s struggled. At least… Read more »

Beautiful day at the old ball park. Maybe the best seats I’ve ever had. And what happens? I get our three best guys killed. Cargo maybe about 75 feet from my seat. Went-down like a shot. I remember our old friend Drew going tsk tsk about how close these guys stand… Appeared to me Dex ran into the ball on his. I was pretty surprised he did not have to continue his at-bat. Per Pat Saunders he has no break… Read more »

Tulo: broken rib. I’m no doctor but I’ve known people (non-professional athletes) who’ve broken ribs. I’d have to say a beginning of August for a return is about the best we can hope for. Remember how I thought this club could maintain contact with the division leaders and we could be buyers at the trade deadline? We’re now officially sellers. What an awful day.

MLB.com is reporting out 4-6 weeks.

I didn’t see the game, but did he injure himself diving for a ball? Tulo’s a great player, but the dude is as brittle as a china doll.

I fear we are seeing another Larry Walker – off the charts, Hall of Fame talent – and all derailed by being prone to injury. What is it about some guys? Seriously, I’m asking?

Ag, I fear you are right. What a blow. I gave you only 4 stars, though, as I’m holding out a sliver of probably unfounded hope that he can be back sooner :p

Fellas and gals… I’m sure most of you won’t agree with me as you will probably think I am always biased in favor of the umps…but…just watched both calls on mlb at bat in full screen…Lopez, most assuradly, balked both times…clearly. Maybe not clear to most but very obvious to me, and I’m not even close, or never was, to a MLB ump, that the calls were correct. BOTH the HP ump and “balkin’ Bob” called the first balk at… Read more »

Ed, thanks for the insight. All I could do was listen to the KOA guys and they were pretty livid on #2 – they said he made some motion of some kind, but that it involved no attempt at deception and therefore did not fall under “balk.” And apparently a lot of us jumped on Balkin’ Bob without complete info. Minor points now with the loss of Tulo…although I guess the balks contributed to the loss yesterday and we now… Read more »

If simply starting and stopping as Lopez did on the second call is a balk then every right handed pitcher balks every time a runner is on 3rd.

No pitcher brings the ball up from his hip to his glove to the plate in one motion when a runner is on 3rd.

EdtheUmp

Prog…you are correct except for one minor infraction…once you BEGIN with that motion you are not allowed to stop and then start again…however small and seemingly inconsequential…

Stopping, no matter how inconsequential and then starting again is a balk at all levels

Horrible events create opportunities for others. Rox site is saying Tulo gone for 4-6 weeks, ugh! This is where people hafta step up. Pacheco, Helton, Cuddyer, Arenado must step into the lead, put the rest of the team on their backs and pull that load up the hill that just popped up in front of them. The pitchers need to get into the seventh/eighth innings. The bullpen needs…well…what do I need to tell ya’ll that isn’t obvious? If, indeed Rutledge… Read more »

In light of what’s happened with this team the past couple of days, I’d like to interjeect a bit of gallows humor to the proceedings. There are certain absolutes that always exist with this team on a yearly basis. I’d like to have some fun with the RWO community and see how many different absolutes we can come up with. I’ll start with the first one: Absolute #1 You can always count with being without the services of Tulo at… Read more »

Great idea, Cisco. Maybe you can start another thread, exclusively for the ABSOLUTES. That way we can keep track of them and keep adding onto as the season goes along.

JD,

Is that something you can do? So far we have 4 absolutes.

With Tulo going down people keep talking about an opportunity for Rutledge. What about an opportunity for Johnny Sparkplug? He is hitting above .300 in limited play. Maybe he shows what he can do filling in for Tulo. Herrera needs to be in this lineup, too many swing and miss hitters to add another one in Rutledge.

Doc

Pooter you sure like the underdogs, don’t you? I love Sparkplug but seems I read WW wasn’t thrilled with his play at short. Personally, I’d rather have him over at 2nd and Rutledge at short. Whoever it is will benefit from Arenado’s range. I’m also looking forward to these pitching changes. Francis and Nicassio are both making it tough, but eventually I’d like to see both of them in the pen. If it were me, I’d call up Oswalt, put… Read more »

Agreed. I think we will see Rutledge back and at SS. I think Herrera and LeMahieu will be moving around.

If we quickly lose a ton of games and fall say 8 or 10 games back in the division I think we’ll see Rutledge play exclusively. Why not?

In the meantime, I would fit Johnny in against right handers and let Rutledge face the lefties.

Absolute #3-
Starting pitching will always be iffy.

Absolute #4-
A usually reliable reliever will have a bad outing at the worst possible time.
