Rockies Swap Hernandez for Harang

According to reports, the Rockies are trading surplus catcher Ramon Hernandez to LA for Aaron Harang.  Harang, a starting pitcher by trade, has been relegated to bullpen status thanks to the surplus of starting pitching in LA.

The Rockies DFA’d Harang right after the trade was announced.  The whole trade was a cost-cutting move by the team and there appears to be some interest in Harang by several teams.

Seems kind of weird.

I’m guessing Harang can’t be sent to the minors is why they designated him for assignment. If true, I totally get it. Who would you send to the minors to keep Harang at the big league level. They saved 1 million dollars off Hernandez’s contract according to Ringolsby, so imo a good move even if they release Harang in 10 days. If we trade him for something else then that is just a bonus.

The DFA of Aaron Harang has nothing to do with the 25 man roster. He got DFA-ed because they don’t have any room on the 40 man roster for him. They don’t want to waive anyone they already have on the 40 man roster and they do have teams that are interested in acquiring Harang. I was flabbergasted that they were able to get anything for Ramon Hernandez. I guess the Dodgers wanted rid of Harang as badly as they… Read more »

Interesting in that Harang figures to be better than Garland, although his history as a flyball pitcher is probably enough to give O’Dowd a serious case of the Guthries (a form of post traumatic stress disorder that causes a GM to sign every extreme groundball pitcher on the market and avoid every flyball pitcher regardless of all other considerations). Having said that, Harang should have real value to someone since the only reason he didn’t was his contract, and it… Read more »

With Chacin, de la Rosa & Nicasio all pitching this year after lengthy injuries last season and with Pomeranz, Freidrich & Chatwood needing extended time in the minors – it just seems like dumping Harang now when the Rockies will likely need starting pitching later is a very bad idea. Unlike many others here I am not at all surprized that that Ramon Hernandez had some MLB value to another team. He is an above average catcher (both hitting and… Read more »

Just out of curiosity Orange, who do you think the Rockies should remove from the 40 man roster to make a spot for Harang?

Assuming the Rockies would want to drop a pitcher which might not be their best option, they could look at Gardner, Sullivan, Scahill, or even Volstad (but I am assuming that they want to by some time to see if the reclamation project of Volstad pays off). The infield is also loaded with options like Herrara, Culberson, Brignac and even 3B Wheeler. My choice would be Sullivan who while he does have some decent stuff has struggled with injuries and… Read more »

I agree that Gardner looks to be the first player on the 40-man roster to come off. One player that seems to be forgotten is Edwar Cabrera. Does anyone know exactly what is wrong with him? When he is due to come off the 60-day DL space will have to be created for him on the 40-man roster.

Although Gardner has had two bad outings to start the season they see him as a potential 3rd time through arm given his sinker. Sullivan is more likely. They will not be giving up on Volstad anytime soon. Their new pitching guru coached him in Miami and we have already seen his curve come back into existence. He will play a key role over the season in that 5-7th role. This team did not add anyone to the 40 after… Read more »

This was good all the way around. First, Hernandez get a chance to play. But he will probably get hurt and that will not help the Dodgers (yea!). Second, we get $1 mill in salary relief and that means come trade deadline IF (yes, big IF) the team is in contention for a playoff spot, we can add some salary. Third, it tells us this team is in better shape than 2012. In 2012 Harang immediately goes to the #1… Read more »

The numbers on the Rockies savings seem to be all over the place. If you are in LA and a Dodger fan then there is no $1M in savings by the Rockies. If you are are a Rockies fan then stories like the one on SB Nation would have you believing the Rockies are “saving a few extra million in payroll” Then some of the national talking heads say it is all in the presentation and interpretation of the numbers.… Read more »
